As the Non-Duke Student Undergraduate Research Assistant, you will join the Center for Child and Family Policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy to support interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, youth mental health, education, and public policy.

This role supports the Voices in the Code project, which centers youth as co-designers of AI mental health technologies and explores ethical, human-centered approaches to social-emotional learning.

In this role, you will actively contribute to research, design, and evaluation efforts that elevate youth voices and inform innovative AI-supported mental health tools.

 

What You'll Do

Qualitative Research & Data Collection – 30%
• Support interviews, focus groups, surveys, and youth feedback collection related to AI mental health technologies and social-emotional learning.

Participatory Design & Workshop Support – 20%
• Assist with preparation, facilitation support, and documentation of youth-centered participatory design workshops.

AI Tool Evaluation & Literature Review – 20%
• Support evaluation of AI mental health tools and conduct literature reviews on AI, youth development, and human-centered design.

Data Organization & Research Support – 15%
• Assist with organizing, coding, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative research data.

Administrative & Project Support – 15%
• Provide project coordination and administrative support, including reports, presentations, and meeting logistics.

 

What You Bring

Education & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree completed or in progress, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Coursework or demonstrated interest in psychology, education, computer science, public policy, or related fields preferred.

Skills & Experience
• Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
• Interest in AI, youth mental health, education, or public policy.
• Experience with qualitative research, workshops, or youth-centered research preferred.
