The Duke University School of Law Office of Student Affairs is seeking a collaborative and student-centered Assistant Dean for Student Affairs to provide strategic leadership for programs, services, and initiatives that support the academic success, personal development, and overall student experience of Duke Law students. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs, you will play a vital role in shaping an inclusive and engaging law school community while partnering with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and university colleagues.
In this leadership position, you will oversee a broad portfolio that includes student engagement and leadership development, orientation, accessibility accommodations, student organizations, student advising, student conduct, commencement, wellness initiatives, and other student affairs programs. You will serve as a trusted resource for students while guiding efforts that foster community, belonging, professional growth, and student success throughout the law school experience.
You will have the opportunity to lead major student programs and collaborate across Duke University to ensure students are supported both inside and outside the classroom. This role combines strategic planning, student advocacy, team leadership, program development, and operational management in support of the Law School's educational mission and commitment to student development.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
Work requires a knowledge and understanding of college experience and student life as well as analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Advanced degree (master's or doctorate) is preferred.
Experience:
Must have at least 5 years' experience in university setting, broad knowledge of higher education and specific knowledge of issues related to graduate education.
Preferred Qualifications
- JD degree plus 5 years' experience working in law school administration, especially in student services, and the practice of law is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and implement complex University and Law School academic requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Strong organizational, project management, and administrative skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing abilities.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and effectively manage sensitive student matters.
- Experience building collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, university administrators, and external partners.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively under pressure while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Proficiency with common business and productivity software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation applications.
This position is onsite. The work is performed on-site at Duke University School of Law.

Position Description:
- Lead the development, implementation, and assessment of student affairs programs and services that enhance student engagement, leadership development, personal growth, and overall student success.
- Direct major Law School programs and events, including LEAD Week orientation, commencement activities, mentoring programs, leadership retreats, Honor Week, International Week, Community Roundtable meetings, and other signature student experiences.
- Develop programming aligned with Duke Law School's Blueprint to LEAD (Lawyer Education and Development) initiative, incorporating its principles into student engagement and leadership programs.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with student leaders, faculty, staff, alumni, university partners, and external constituencies to support a vibrant and connected student community.
- Serve as primary advisor to student organizations, including the Duke Bar Association (DBA), and provide guidance regarding governance, programming, budgeting, leadership development, and organizational effectiveness.
- Advise the Moot Court Board on financial and programmatic matters and support student organizations in achieving their goals while maintaining compliance with university and law school policies.
- Oversee training and education for student organization leaders on financial management, event planning, risk management, and applicable University and Law School requirements.
- Maintain and regularly update the Student Organization Handbook and related policies, procedures, and resources.
- Review and approve student programming and event-planning processes to promote safety, accountability, and responsible organizational operations.
- Conduct program assessments and evaluate student engagement initiatives to measure effectiveness and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Serve as a liaison between students and Law School administration, providing guidance on policies, procedures, academic requirements, and American Bar Association standards.
- Advise students on personal and academic concerns and connect them with appropriate University resources, including counseling and psychological services when needed.
- Serve as the Law School's Disability Services Liaison and advise students regarding accommodation policies and procedures.
- Coordinate implementation of approved accommodations in partnership with the University's Student Disability Access Office and other stakeholders.
- Provide leadership and management for the Office of Student Affairs, including supervision of professional and administrative staff.
- Manage the Office of Student Affairs budget, including oversight of funding allocated for approved student travel and programming initiatives.
- Assist with bar examination-related services, including references, certification processes, and coordination with state bar examiners regarding character and fitness requirements.
- Partner with the Associate Dean for Inclusive Engagement and Culture and other campus leaders to strengthen community, student engagement, and student success initiatives.
- Participate in strategic Law School and University committees and represent the Office of Student Affairs on institutional initiatives and partnerships.
- Nominate students for fellowships, awards, and recognition opportunities and participate in annual student recognition programs.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $68,179.00 to USD $125,438.00.
