Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health pro fessionals who assistin the preparation and care of surgical patients ra nging from infancy togeriatrics under the general direction of a profess ional nurse. The STpossesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile aseptictechnique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, su rgicalprocedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitat e asurgeon's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedur es.The ST who has a dual function in the operating room and the ambulato rysetting demonstrates competency in the care of surgical patientspreope ratively and postoperatively in the ambulatory surgical clinicsetting.</ p>

Level INew graduate with up to 18 month s of full-time equivalent experience.Perform all responsibilities in a m anner that demonstrates ServiceExcellence towards patients, physicians, peers and other departments.Assume responsibility for upholding the poli cies and procedures of thedepartment and organization.Demonstrates eager ness to learn, takes direction, adapts to changeswithin unit, demonstrat es consistent progress toward Level II.Establishes and maintains sterile field and assures team maintainssterile environment. Demonstrate and pr actice a good understanding ofsterile technique.Has a basic knowledge of instrumentations. Prepare Operating Room withappropriate instrumentatio n, equipment and supplies.Demonstrates correct and safe instrumentation passing and performssponge, needle and instrument counts in a safe and a ccurate manner.Maintain technical skills to serve a patient population c omprised ofinfancy to geriatric clients.Take calls and rotate shifts as required under the direction of aregistered nurse.For Surgical Technolog ists with a dual role in an ambulatoryenvironment, additional responsibi lities may include: prepare patientsfor examinations and procedures in t he surgical clinic setting; assistthe physician during patient examinati on and procedures in the clinic;collect and label laboratory specimens f or processing; reinforcepostoperative instructions under direction of ph ysician or RN; assistwith incoming and outgoing patient calls under supe rvision of physicianor RN; remove sutures/ staples, change sterile and n on-steriledressings, following DUHS policies and procedures, under direc tion of RNor physician; perform other clinical functions as delegated an dsupervised by the RN or physician; schedule and post surgical cases;coordinate complex scheduling of cases which require additional surgicalsup port; update and file patient medical records.Must advance to level II w ithin 18 months.Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.Le vel IIPerform all the duties and responsibilities of Level I, plus thefo llowing:Assist with the teaching of newly hired technologists and studen ttechnologists.Serve as a role model to new employees and other staff me mbers.Establish and maintain sterile field and assure team maintains ste rileenvironment independently.Anticipate the needs of the surgical team. Apply basic knowledge of instrumentations to several cases.Demonstrate appropriate and correct case preparation.Competent at unit level.Correct s deficiencies at the case level.Communicate effectively with patients, staff members and physicians.Adherence to standards including but not li mited to unit and hospitalpolicies and procedures, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals.Assume responsibility for self and ensures tha tthe policies, proceduresand safety practices of the Operating Room and Hospital are reinforced.Perform other duties and responsibilities as re quired.

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or maintains anaccredited Surgical Technologist certification (NCCT or NBS TSA). Or,provides evidence of the successful completion of an appropriat etraining program for Surgical Technology in the United States Military.
Experience
Level I- Entry level position for new gra duates of Surgical Technologyprogram or Surgical Technologists with 0 to 18 months experience.Level II- Requires 6 to 12 months of full-time equ ivalent SurgicalTechnology or relevant military experience.
