Occ Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care s upport partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical N urse (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provid esdirect care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit c oordination. Theindividual in this positionis expected to perform basic care andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popul ationneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected to assist the RN/LPN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individualis expected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacyofe very patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpatie nt care. They are expected to knowand adhere to all basic policiesandpr ocedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They are expected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral unit upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed,with or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurateve rbal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.

 

Work Performed

Prep are patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovide manual assistance as required.Obtain and record patient data for medical records noting and informingRN/LPN of information collected.Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,but notlimi tedto, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nailcare, bed-ma king, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, andbowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meet the person al needs and comfort of assigned patients.Participate in teaching activi ties by reinforcing teaching instructed byRN and/or providers as needed. Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helpingpositio n patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients.Takeand record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andreportany ch anges in patient's condition. Turn and position patients,set up and feed patients as necessary, provide patients with freshdrinking water.Perfor m fingersticks for blood glucose testing,with appropriatetraining, docu ment and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admission, discharge, and transportat ion of patients. Followstandard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on pati ent specimens. Cleanassigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equi pment as required.Participate in own professional development by maintai ning requiredskills validation and attending educational offerings. Supp ort thedevelopment of other staff and formal learners.May also perform c lean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.Perform other related dutiesincidental to work described herein.

 

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of procedures and techniques inv olved in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety pr ecautions applicable to work in a hospital.Working knowledge of the orga nization and physical layout of thehospital.Working knowledge ofinfectio n control procedures and safetyprecautions.Ability to withstandprolonged standing and walking.This position is very active and requiresstanding, walking, bending,kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling andclimbing al l day. Theemployee must frequently lift or move objects and patients wei ghing over35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.Abilit y to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to docu ment and communicate pertinent information using computerand/or paper do cumentation tools.Ability to establish and maintain effectiveworking rel ationships withpatients and hospital staff.Working knowledgeof principle s and practices of providing non-professional bedside patient care.Pre-e mployment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.

Education

Completion of a Leve l - Nurse Aide education program approved by theNorth Carolina Board of Nursing or successful completion of the NC -approved Nurse Aide I competency test. High School diploma or equivalent required.

Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the Division of Facility Services with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment.
