Job Summary
The Duke Health Lake Norman Gastroenterology Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA-C) provides direct patient care services for patients presenting to the Gastroenterology Clinic on the Lake Norman campus as well as providing inpatient consultations in Lake Norman Hospital in collaboration with DHLN GI physicians. The GI NP or PA performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies, provides professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct patient care services. All Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants contribute to excellence in patient care, research, education and provides leadership in the organization.
Primary hours will be Monday through Friday, day shift, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of care.
- Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform thorough physical examinations.
- Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment toxicities.
- Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgement including prescribing appropriate medications.
- Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health records
- Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
- Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
- Participate in education of patients, family members, new staff, students and other learners.
- See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
- Attend program required meetings.
- Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
- Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
- Maintain institutional requirements for compliance.
- Rounding in the hospital on patients that need consults or follow ups.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Able to clearly articulate scope of practice, and practices within those guidelines as a Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System.
- Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems
- Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
- Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
- Able to use fine motor skills
- Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations.
- Able to use computer and learn new software programs
- Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
- Able to navigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations
- Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
- Able to remain focused and organized
- Able to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
- Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
- Physician Assistants: Work requires completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.
Certification
- AGPCNP, AGACNP, ANP, or FNP certification required for NP candidates, PA-C certification required for PA candidates.
- BLS required.
License
- Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure & NP approval to practice in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required.
- Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. BLS required.
- Both: Federal and State independent DEA license will full prescriptive authority required.
Experience
- 1+ years of APP experience preferred
Job Hours
Monday-Friday, five day shifts per week with flexibility to meet clinic needs. Seven clinic half day sessions and three administration half day sessions per week. No weekends. No night or weekend call.
