The smallest of Duke Health’s four hospitals at 123-beds, it offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including 24-hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women's services, and surgical specialties.

Occ Summary

Coordinate and participate in a variety of techni cal tasks, tests anddeterminations involving the utilization of radioact ive materials andmeasurement instrumentation.


Work Performed

Coordinate and participatein a variety of technical procedures toinclude in vivo and in vitro studies; operate radiation detection andm easurement instrumentation including stationary imaging devices,scintill ation gamma and apparatus for in vitro counting.Calibrate and draw up ra diopharmaceutical materials for administrationto patients; formulate rad iopharmaceutical materials from pre-preparedkits. Calibrate instruments and review calibration data to detect trendsindicating instrument malfun ction. Calculate data to include results ofpatient studies and radioacti ve decay.Evaluate recorded images for technical quality.Process computer ized image data to include function curves andreconstructed SPECT images .Assume care for physical and psychological needs of patient of all ages during an examination, initiates life support measures for patient, ifne cessary.Maintain inventoryof supplies in assigned area; prepare and mai ntainrecords concerning radiopharmaceutical receiving, dispensing anddis posal activities. Maintain records of order, including brachytherapyproc edures, receipt and disposal of all radioactive material in thedepartmen t.Provide instruction and technical guidance to radiologic technologystu dents or other advanced imaging techs; assist in training newemployees.M onitor Nuclear Medicine Department with portable survey meter forpossibl e contamination.Performs EKG prep, tracingPerform other related duties i ncidental to the work described herein.Assist in the development and eva luation of new procedures andtechniques to meet the needs of specific pr otocols as required: consultwith physician concerning the application of nuclear medicine proceduresand techniques.Administer thyroid therapy to patient that has undergone prior clinicaland nuclear medicine diagnosis, insures decay of pharmaceutical andcalculates for correct dosage in do se calibrator, observes patientdosage to insure proper treatment under d irect supervision ofradiologist.Assist in quality assurance program rela ting to calibration andmaintenance of equipment.Assist with the educatio n and training of new physicians (interns,residents, and fellows) as app licable.Perform other related duties incidental to the work described he rein.**DUHS offers career growth and enrichment within Imaging services. Education

Graduate or completi on of program that meets eligibility requirementsfor registry/certificat ion or currently holds required registry orcertification.


Ex perience

None required beyond above education/certification requi rements.Level I must obtain ARRT or NMCTB certification within 18 months ofemployment.Level II Minimum of two years' experience as a Nuclear Med icinetechnologist.Level III A minimum of four years' experience within s pecialty modalityin which they are seeking promotion.

Degrees, Li censures, Certifications

ARRT (N) certification and/or NMTCB cert ification within 18 months ofemployment.BLS certification
