Occ Summary
Perform a variety of routine and complex technica l tasks in theperformance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosisand treatment of disease. Job duties are dependent on the laboratoryand may be composed of a combination of the following duties a ndresponsibilities related to the specialization.
Work Perfo rmed
Perform routine tests in clinical laboratories for use in th etreatment and diagnosis of disease using standard techniques andequipment; perform related duties in laboratory to include storing andlabeling specimens and using manual and automatic equipment to preparespecimens a nd perform analytical tests.Prepare sterile media in plates, jars or tes t tubes for use in growingbacterial cultures; incubate culture for speci fic times at prescribedtemperatures.Understand and comply with laborator y Quality Control and QualityAssurance policies and procedures for instr umentation and testing.Prepare solutions, reagents and stains, followingstandard laboratoryformulas and procedures.Maintain detailed records of tests performed and report laboratory testresults to appropriate person nel; recognize Quality Control shifts andtrends and take appropriate act ion whenever necessary.Calibrate and perform routine maintenance on test equipment, clean andsterilize laboratory equipment, glassware and instr uments, maintainlaboratory supply of chemicals and glassware; perform ro utinemaintenance on equipment.Collect blood specimens from patients usin gvenipuncture, or heel orfinger stick; carry out Point-of-Care Testing waived tests andurinalysis without microscopeUtilize various hospital an d laboratory information systems andsoftware.Interact in a professional and courteous manner with doctors, nurses,and other personnel to provide technical guidance and address concerns.Perform other related duties in cidental to the work described herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience involving patient contact, customer service in amedicalsetting, strong communication skills, both verbal and writt en.Basic knowledge of medical terminologyWorking knowledge of laboratory and hospital computer systems is helpfulBasic knowledge of laboratory s afety and infection control proceduresand practices including standard p recautions and hazardous chemicalhandling.Ability to demonstrate require d dexterity, knowledge, and ability tocomplete assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail andcompliance with all appropriate regu latoryand safety requirements.Ability to maintain effective working rel ationships with otheremployees.
Level Characteristics
Act as the PIC (person in charge aka General Supervisor in the absenceo f the Supervisor/Manager/Tech III) after attaining 1 yr of highcomplexit y laboratory experience post scientific baccalaureate degree or2 years h igh complexity experience post scientific associate degree.Provide daily supervision and/or oversight of the laboratory operationand personnel p erforming testing and reporting test results.Provide direct supervision of all high complexity testing.Monitor testing to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performanceare maintained.Responsibilities delegated from the director or technical supervisorinclude:Assure remedial action is taken and documented whenever tests systemsdeviate from established performance specificationsEnsure that patient testing results are not re ported until correctiveaction has been taken and the test system is func tioning properly

AS, AD or BS Degree or previous classification as non-ce rtified medicaltechnologist.
Experience
Minimal educa tional or experience requirements may be modified on acase-by-case basis at the discretion ofthe CLIA (Clinical LaboratoryImprovement Amendment ) director if minimal CLIA requirements are met bythe employee for the t asks being performed.
