Job Description

The CMO is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of medical staff services. This role ensures compliance with all applicable national, state, and local laws, as well as regulatory standards including JCAHO, NCQA, and other governing bodies. The position supports the implementation of care management programs, facilitates credentialing processes, and serves as a key liaison between hospital administration, medical staff, and Duke University Health System (DUHS).

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of applicable national, state, and local laws, and ensure compliance with JCAHO, NCQA, and other regulatory requirements affecting medical and allied health staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or incidental to the responsibilities described.
  • Provide leadership in strategic planning, execution, and implementation of care management programs.
  • Oversee and support medical management decisions that align with corporate objectives and maximize patient benefits.
  • Monitor and evaluate management practices and productivity indicators, including turnover rates, absenteeism, budget variances, and satisfaction surveys from patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Act as the primary liaison between hospital administration, entity medical staff, and DUHS.
  • Represent the hospital professionally in the community and through participation in professional organizations.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership in delegation, organization, and coordination of intra- and inter-departmental activities.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that support the provision of medical staff services, including space planning, equipment, personnel, and other resources.
  • Assess and communicate recommendations for space utilization and submit accurate and timely reports to relevant departments.
  • Serve as liaison with external parties and institutions, including public, governmental, and DUHS entities.
  • Oversee and manage all on-site inspections, assist inspectors and surveyors, and provide required follow-up reports.
  • Develop and implement effective staff development and retention strategies.
  • Ensure medical staff and allied health appointments and privileges comply with credentialing best practices.
  • Oversee the preparation of agendas and materials for the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) and other medical staff committees.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

MD with an unrestricted medical license required.

 

Experience

Minimum of seven or more years of clinical practice, participation in a leadership role in medical staff organization activities, and through management experience within a health care delivery system. Three to five years of management preferred.

 

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Board certification in medical management preferred.
