Occupational Summary
Operate steam boilers, chilled water systems, pumping systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation. Monitor HVAC and electrical systems to maintain operational performance. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Work Performed
-
Operate steam boilers, chilled water systems, pumping systems, and auxiliary equipment locally at the direction of the control room operator or supervisors

Monitor equipment, conduct operational rounds, and maintain accurate records of equipment status

Perform lock-out/tag-out procedures for equipment requiring maintenance
-
Clean and maintain equipment and work areas
-
Remain current on changes to operating procedures, new equipment, and system updates

Assist mechanics and technicians with troubleshooting tasks as needed or directed

Assist other operators with operations and emergency procedures

Observe and monitor electrical systems and provide feedback on performance

Participate in plant equipment training and onboarding

Locate major branches, valves, and piping systems to troubleshoot plant or distribution issues

Use applicable computer software for plant operations and reporting
-
Perform basic calculations and conversions related to system functions

Conduct chemical testing and analysis of process water and maintain chemical levels within designed limits

Maintain chemical logs accurately and legibly

Provide technical guidance and direction to junior personnel

Perform other related duties incidental to the responsibilities above

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in operating utility systems equipment, facilities, or distribution systems

Must pass the Basic Duke Utility Systems Operations Test within 6 months of entering the position
OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications:

Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required

Forklift certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire
