Join our dynamic team at Duke University, where innovation and excellence are at the forefront of everything we do. We are seeking a passionate and driven individual to fill the role of Violin and Viola Teacher in the Duke University String School (DUSS), a pre-collegiate program administered by the Music Department. If you are ready to make a meaningful impact and contribute to our mission, this is the opportunity for you!

Be You: As a Violin and Viola Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in nurturing the musical talents of elementary, middle, and high school students. Your expertise and dedication will be crucial in teaching and selecting scales, etudes, and pieces for private students as well as chamber groups at an appropriate pace for their level of ability. You will lead violin and intermediate level ensembles, manage the webpage for assigned ensembles, and prepare students for solo recitals, ensemble rehearsals, and concerts. You will coordinate with other String School teachers, parents, volunteers, students, and the Director, and attend monthly String School teacher meetings and DUSS concerts. Your unique skills and perspectives will be valued and celebrated as you contribute to the vibrant Duke community.

Be Bold: At Duke, we encourage bold thinking and innovative approaches. As a Violin and Viola Teacher, you will have the freedom to explore new ideas, challenge the status quo, and make a lasting impact. We believe in empowering our team members to take risks and push boundaries. Your contributions will shape the future of our department and the university as a whole. Embrace this opportunity to be bold and make a difference!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Violin or Viola Performance, or Music Education.
  • Experience with both Suzuki and Traditional pedagogical methods, with a preference for the pedagogical methods outlined on String Pedagogy.com developed by Mimi Zweig.
  • Experience teaching group violin classes preferred.
