Occ Summary

The Duke Toxicology Program at the Occupational a nd EnvironmentalMedicine Division (OEM) provides toxicological evaluatio ns and riskassessments for potentially hazardous substances in consumer andcommercial arts and craft product formulations. Evaluations include a nassessment for regulatory compliance against federal, state, andinterna tional laws regulating consumer product hazard labeling andworker hazard communication. In addition to expert toxicologicaljudgment, the evaluation process includes the application of aToxicology Data Base Management System (DMS). The DMS is an internallydeveloped computerized expert sys tem that applies toxicological riskassessment paradigms to produce confi dential reports to clients. The DMSrequires accurate input of qualitativ e and quantitative productinformation. Constituent data are acquired fro m laboratory analyticalreports, published articles, proprietary research , and regulatorysources. The staff that supports the program requires specific skillsets and the ability to work with the DMS.Using the DMS to r eview and evaluate product formulations and technicalmaterials. This act ivity requires training in order to providetoxicological assessment of c onsumer products in accordance withUSFederal consumer product regulatio ns such as HSA/LHAMA/CPSA, CanadianConsumer Product regulations, and spe cific European Union consumerproduct regulations.


Work Perfo rmed

Toxicologist:Utilize the DMS for evaluating and interpreting chemical formulationsand product descriptions.Convert and use informati on regarding analytical concentration data.Utilize information provided in research reports regarding toxicologicalevaluations and risk assessme nts.Use a risk assessment approach for toxicological evaluations andesta blishing threshold levels for exposure.Maintain confidentiality regardin g topics of proprietary origin andimpact.Utilize the computer data manag ement system effectively.Communicate effectively and amicably with groupmembers, data suppliersand clients.Establish professional interaction w ith several consumer productcertifying organizations including their sta ff, technical committees andboards of directors.Interact in an efficient manner with toxicology, technical, andadministrative staff.Senior Toxic ologist:In addition to the above-listed duties:Approve product formulati ons and technical materials.Assist in training and supervision of toxico logists and technical staffmembers.


Knowledge, Skills and Ab ilities

Toxicologist:Knowledge of toxicological principles and me chanisms (chemical andbiological), dose determinants, and laboratory tes ting methods.Experience in applying toxicology and risk assessment princ iples.Experience with working in a technical/administrative team environ mentis a plus.Ability to learn DMS for evaluating and interpreting produ ctformulations, technical materials, research reports, risk assessments, and computer data management system.Senior Toxicologist:At least 3 yearsof experience using the DMS or similar menu-drivenmicrocomputer softwar e for the toxicological evaluation of productformulations.Familiarity an d experience consumer product safety reviews applying USFederal and Stat e consumer product regulations (FHSA, CPSIA, State COClaws).Knowledge of Canadian and European Union consumer product regulations isa plus.Exper ience in the management of technical and professional staff is aplus.</p >

Anticipated Pay Range:

 

Duke U niversity provides an annual base salary range for thisposition as USD $ 82,370.00 to USD $164,742.00.Duke University considersfactors such as ( but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of theposition; candidate 's work experience, education/training, and keyskills; internal peer equ ity; as well as market and organizationalconsiderations when extending a n offer.

Education

Toxicologist & Senior Toxico logist:Ph.D. in Toxicology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology or a rel atedfield.


Experience

Toxicologist:Post-doctoral rese arch training or involvement with some element ofapplied toxicology or a minimum of 2 years of experience in the practiceof toxicology.SeniorTox icologist:Board Certification in Toxicology is required.Post-doctoral re search training or involvement with some element ofapplied toxicology or a minimum of 5 years of experience in the practiceof toxicology.
