Occupational Summary

 

The Social Media Strategist is responsible for leading and executing Duke Alumni Engagement and Development (AED) social media strategy, including managing AED’s official Forever Duke social media accounts. This position (in collaboration with other members of the team) will generate and distribute engaging social content for our audiences, including alumni, donors, students, and friends. They also will run AED’s social community management by interacting with audiences, keeping them engaged, informed, and interested. This role reports to the Executive Director of Digital Content Strategy within AED’s Marketing, Communications, and Stewardship team.

 


Job Responsibilities

 

Channel and Content Management

 

  • Coordinate and lead the AED social media presence, including creating and scheduling posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other potential future social platforms.
  • Lead social media community management, which includes interacting with followers, answering questions, responding to messages, and aligning content with real-time marketing opportunities.
  • Coordinate with other staff in AED, such as multi-media producers, designers, account managers, and program directors.

 

Strategy and Analysis

 

  • Ensure social media campaigns and concepts support established marketing objectives for engagement activities, fundraising campaigns, university priorities, etc.
  • Track and analyze social media KPIs (awareness, engagement, trends, etc.) in coordination with AED’s digital team. Provide regular analysis and social metric reporting, and report insights and key learnings
  • Develop social advertising strategies and campaigns in coordination with digital team that encourage engagement and inspire philanthropic support of the university
  • Analyze social media trends and platforms to discover new ways for AED to maintain a contemporary, relevant presence
  • Research and implement fundraising and engagement best practices for nonprofits and universities on social media

 

 

Partnership and Collaboration

 

  • Advise and support AED and university partners with social media requests and content as needed
  • Collaborate with Duke schools and units to ensure their priorities and messages are represented when appropriate
  • Serve as a spokesperson for AED’s social media activities and project its leadership in this arena
  • Provide training opportunities for AED and university staff
  • Advise and assist university crisis response teams through monitoring, strategizing, and responding to potential emergencies
  • Ensure projects that fall under the position’s oversight maintain AED and university social media guidelines and brand standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Preferred Qualifications

 

Technical:

  • Four years of direct experience managing social media in a sophisticated and complex organization that has a strong external presence
  • Demonstrated excellence in messaging and brand development
  • Experience developing and implementing effective direct marketing campaigns across multiple channels required
  • Ability to both manage and create content in various formats and media, such as (but not limited to) graphics, photography, design, and video
  • Experience in event marketing and using market/audience research to develop communications plans preferred
  • Knowledge of educational fundraising, higher education issues, research universities, and Duke University preferred

Anticipated Pay Range:

 

 

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $60,328.00 to USD $94,000.00. Education

Work requires communications, marketing, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally required through completion of Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English or a related field.

 

Experience

Requires four years of experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or related field with experience posting and publishing through print and electronic mediums, including content management systems.Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skill snecessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks. Experience working in an academic environment is preferred.
