This is a job posting for a Sr. Grants and Contracts Manager within the Campus Grants Management Team (CGMT), a dynamic and growing unit in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, which provides cradle-to-grave grant management services for specifically identified departments. CGMT is dedicated to providing high quality customer service and compliant award management to our customers. CGMT is comprised of trained and skilled research administrators that provide faculty and researchers in the Provost area units with high-quality lifecycle sponsored research administration services.
CGMT seeks a senior grants and contracts manager who will lead multiple teams within CGMT. The goal of this role is to provide consistent administrative support to existing CGMT teams by ensuring uniformity in existing workload and training on grant functions related primarily to proposal submission. Successful candidates will be proficient in lifecycle grants administration as well as a strong trainer and team builder.
Lifecycle research administrators in CGMT are more than transaction processors; they are subject-matter experts and partners with their faculty in crafting excellent proposals and managing awards in accordance with sponsor guidelines. To be a successful grant manager in CGMT, you must thrive in a fast-paced environment, ability to manage multiple priorities, and be a strong critical thinker and problem solver.
This position is responsible for managing and overseeing an assigned portfolio of complex grants and contracts with a firm grasp of rules and regulations, technical expertise, analytical skills and an aptitude for using good judgement in applying grant management practices and procedures. This position will manage a team of
Grants and Contracts Administrators. The successful candidate for this position will be someone with the ability to constructively manage a team, have a strong analytical background, ability to think critically, has strong attention to detail, makes sound independent decisions, provide sound, accurate guidance to PIs and their staff, and someone who is a high level excel user. Pre-award activities include assisting departmental faculty/PI in the development, preparation, and submission of research proposals. Ensure all applications meet agency and university guidelines, published time tables and deadlines. Ensure proposals are entered and routed in a timely manner for further review. Assist with budget, budget justification, other support, and additional administrative documents. Post-award activities include meeting with faculty regularly to provide updates and guidance, validating AAR for expenses, completing detailed reconciliation of assigned project budgets, preparing complex budget reports, preparing adjustments and corrections in assigned project budgets and closing out projects in line with university and sponsor guidelines. This position is responsible for a specified highly complex grants and contracts portfolio using discretion and independent judgment to make decisions that impact the compliance and successful completion of grant and contract objectives. Manager and team portfolio may consist of federal, non-federal, and/or international funding with varying degrees of complexity. This position is expected to manage at least two additional staff positions in addition to their own grant portfolio.
Work Performed
10%- In coordination with Director and other Senior Managers, develop goals and objectives for the unit, develop and maintain SOPs, update and implement departmental training initiatives. Maintains communication with the Director to report and address any grant- related administrative or compliance issue in a timely manner.
20%- Serve as subject matter expert and primary point of contact for all aspects of research administration for their team. Oversee all pre-award and post award research activities. Ensure institutional and sponsor compliance, budgetary appropriateness, and compliance of grant and contract awards to applicable governmental guidelines. Develops and updates SOPs, monitoring guidelines, and process for the unit. Reviews and approves SPS records, JVs, rebudgets, closeouts, and WBSE requests.
50% - Serves as lifecycle grant manager for designated portfolio.
20% - Interface with Principal Investigators, Business Managers of supported units. Meet regularly to encourage partnership and collaboration between units. Communicate policy updates and help resolve concerns.

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Research or grants education and/or certification is preferred. Successful completion of the Research Administration Academy (RAA), Advanced Grants Management, and Research Administration Institute (RAI) training is required. Employees hired into this classification without the expected credentials will work closely with their manager to schedule and complete all training (12 months to complete RAA and an additional 6 months to complete AGM). Successful completion of all expected training will be an annual performance goal until complete. Upon successful completion of expected training, the employee must maintain Research Administration Academy (RAA) certification, Advanced Grants Management (AGM), Research Administration Institute (RAI) certification by completing continuing education requirements. Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification is preferred.

Duke U niversity provides an annual base salary range for thisposition as USD $ 74,285.00 to USD $148,569.00.
