Occupational Summary:

 

Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching both group and private swim lessons to participants ages 6 months through adults. Swim Instructors may also be responsible for providing instruction to other aquatics programming such as masters swimming, swim team preparation, or youth swim team.

 

Duke Recreation and Physical Education is seeking individuals to become a part of our Recreation Center Aquatics Team. We are seeking employees who can commit up to 19.9 hours per week.

Work Performed

 

· Arrive at work on time and in uniform and ready to work by the start of each lesson.

· Ensure you have all the equipment you need before each class/session starts.

· Teach according to the curriculum provided, level, or program being offered.

· Create a warm, friendly, and safe environment for all classes.

· Greet all participants as they arrive for class.

· Ensure all students are registered for that class/session.

· Provide a safe, fun and effective lesson that is welcoming to all, ensuring outstanding customer service to all our participants.

· Evaluate each student’s progress every class and keep record of skills they’ve accomplished on skills sheets provided.

· Maintain direct and clear communication with the Coordinator of Aquatics about each student’s progress.

· Assist with pool setup and tear down- before and after each lesson/session.

· Follow procedures for check-in and registration of lessons/classes.

· Attend all mandatory training or staff meetings as scheduled.

· Understand and honor DRPE mission, core values and customer service standards inside and outside the aquatic centers.

· Understand the emergency preparedness procedures for DRPE Aquatics Department and render first aid and CPR within the scope of your training.

· Answer any questions or concerns participants have. If you are unable to answer questions, refer them to the appropriate person on aquatics staff.

· Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

 

Education/Training

· Must be 18 years of age or older.

· Certification in First-Aid, CPR/AED or willingness to obtain within 60 days.

· Certification as a Water Safety Instructor (preferred)

 

Experience

· At least 1 full year experience working with Children and/or Adults in the aquatic’s environment.

 

Skills

· Swimming Background and knowledge of all 4 strokes

· Ability to interact with diverse groups through a variety of situations.

· Ability to use independent judgment when needed.

 

General

· Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.

· Must be able to work 4 hours per week.
