Visitor Experience Weekend Assistant (Part time)

 

The Sarah P. Duke Gardens is seeking a part-time Visitor Experience Weekend Assistant to begin ASAP on Saturdays or Sundays (9am-5pm) year-round, as needed.

 

Duke Gardens is a botanic garden in the heart of Duke University that inspires transformative learning, promotes wellness and builds community. More than 600,000 visitors from all over the world visit the Gardens annually. Admission is free, and we are open from 8 a.m. to dusk 365 days a year. On University holidays, the Doris Duke Center is closed.

 

In this position, you will work with Duke Gardens staff to deliver a great Gardens experience for all visitors. Duties include planning, coordinating and managing the weekend Visitor Experience team of staff and volunteers in accordance with our goals, values, and mission. This staff position leads by example with hands-on involvement to model excellent visitor service and provide a safe, clean, positive, engaging and welcoming weekend experience at the Gardens on Saturdays and Sundays. This position will build expertise in assessing, planning and responding to a wide range of customer service situations and develop skills in managing in a public indoor and outdoor environment.

 

Duties:

· Develop and maintain communication systems to support active visitation and customer service, including documentation of visitor needs, issues and incidents.

· Understanding and communication of Gardens policies to visitors

· Ability to handle visitor needs and inquiries

· Ability to work collaboratively while also taking initiative and prioritizing multiple tasks

· Communication with appropriate personnel and departments, including Duke Parking and Transportation and Duke Police, to ensure visitor safety, communicate pertinent information and to answer inquires based on knowledge of program activities.

· Develop and send shift reports to supervisor and fellow Visitor Experience team members in support of program activities and Gardens operations, including progress reports, incident reports, emergent or ongoing problems and any implemented solutions or management actions.

· Manage staffing requirements including assessment of staffing needs and assignment of personnel as needed. Supervise and support volunteers and work-study students. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge of basic customer service and communications principles normally acquired through two years of postsecondary education.

 

Experience:

Work generally requires two years of clerical or customer service experience to acquire skills in communication and problem-solving as well as accepted office organization, communications and

research practice. A bachelor's degree in a field of study directly related to the specific position may be substituted for the education and experience requirement.

 

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

Skills:

Successful candidate will be able to walk a mile over varied terrain, have a valid U.S. driver’s license and the ability to lift 20 lbs.
