High Voltage Operations Engineer
BACKGROUND
Duke Utility & Engineering Services (DUES) includes the following operating units that provide the full range of utility & engineering services to the Duke Campus and Medical Center: Chilled Water, Steam, Electrical HV Systems, Water (including water, sewer, and storm water), Energy Management and Engineering. The Electrical HV Systems organization is responsible for installation, maintenance, and operation of the high voltage distribution system, central emergency power generation systems and the campus site lighting. DUES is within the Facilities Management Department (FMD) that reports to the Vice President for Facilities Services. This position reports to the High Voltage System Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The HV Operations Engineer is responsible for the management and oversight of the operation, maintenance and construction team within the Electrical HV Systems organization. Responsibilities also include the development of design standards, PM programs and system SOPs. The HV Operations engineer will also own the both the distribution and generation system renewal programs.
Typical Duties
- Responsible for a growing team of 15+. Direct management of HV Supervisor and future administrative staff to support team growth.
- Coordinate the design, procurement, and construction of new high voltage distribution systems to meet the needs of new or renovated facilities.
- Review HV electrical plans, specifications and equipment for new installations and renovations; inspect projects during and following installation and advise as to compliance with specifications prior to University acceptance.
- Assist in the development and updates of the University standards and guidelines for future project planning, design, construction and maintenance activities to insure best practices are employed.
- Advise and assist with problems involving electrical engineering and maintenance.
- Prepare complex switching procedures.
- Assist in operation, maintenance and design of medium voltage generation equipment and paralleling switchgear.
- Prepare and develop Preventative Maintenance programs for power distribution and generation equipment.
- Prepare reports, analyses, and presentations as needed.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (preferences)
Education and Experience
B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and 5 years experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience skills.
Preferred 3 years experience supervising technical staff
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience with operation and maintenance of 15kV switchgear, generators, and underground distribution systems.
- High level of organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning skills including data analysis techniques and statistical interpretation skills
- Basic knowledge of site lighting systems.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70E)
- Knowledge of SCADA systems
- Experience with SKM circuit analysis software or similar
- Ability to create and maintain positive customer and stakeholder relationships.
- Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- CAD drafting skills utilizing AutoCAD
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a specific engineering field related to construction (e.g. Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and eligibility for North Carolina licensure as an Engineer.
Experience
Work requires a minimum of three years experience in design, planning, OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE evaluation and project management related to new construction and renovation of buildings and/or systems.
