Research Program Leader

The Duke Global Health Institute is looking for a Research Program Leader to join our team. The Research Program Leader will support Dr. Emily Smith’s research program and will be a key strategic person on the team. Dr. Smith’s research program includes global projects related to children’s cancer, children’s surgery, and the intersection of poverty and policy on children’s health.

Minimum Requirements: 

• Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• · Work requires the ability to plan and administer programs and direct program activities within a specific functional area, generally acquired through four years of related experience.

This position is. 

• Hybrid and/or remote eligible position (exempt only). The employee must reside in a Duke University-approved state.

This position will include:

• Coordinating strategic planning towards the PI’s program goals, coordinating all teams related to the PI’s research, and providing leadership for all study teams. Coordination and leadership will include planning and participating in meetings with PI and all study team members to ensure research metrics and goals are planned for and met.
• Providing oversight to develop and implement standard operating protocols, procedures, and policies for projects within the program.
• Preparing applications for external and internal grants and contracts to include development of budgets; administer departmental grants and contracts in accordance with University policies and sponsors' requirements regarding records, reports, controls and conditions governing expenditures of funds. Grants will include both external and internal grants and the position will provide oversight and leadership to ensure the grants are submitted on time. The position will also provide leadership and oversight of funded grants, including ensuring budgets are adhered to, regulatory documents are kept up to date, and compliance of federal and Duke regulatory research guidelines are followed.
• Corresponding with interested students and other universities to provide information concerning activities, policies and procedures of the program. Prepare budgetary recommendations for fiscal year requirements for the PI’s research portfolio including external grant contracts and internal funding; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds for the PI’s research portfolio, including NIH-funded grants, philanthropic donations, and internal funding.
• Directing various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. The position will report directly to the PI and oversee/supervise 4-7 staff members on the PI’s research projects (project coordinators, data collectors, etc).

The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI), founded in 2006, is a central initiative within Duke University’s new Strategic Plan “Making a Difference.” Based on Duke’s rich tradition of interdisciplinary work and drawing on the intellectual assets of the entire university to address global issues, the DGHI seeks to reduce health disparities locally and globally through programs and activities in global health education, research, service, and policy.
