Position:  Senior Business Manager

Working Title: Division Administrator, Translational Health Sciences and Research Administrator, Department of Emergency Medicine

 

 

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers a robust research portfolio and has recently established a new division, Translational Health Sciences (THS), dedicated to utilizing rigorous and cross-cutting translational research methods to advance access to and quality of emergency healthcare locally, nationally and globally. The division is a catalyst for research centered on multidisciplinary collaboration and diverse teams within and outside of the department. THS faculty intersect with clinical research teams in the areas of data science, artificial intelligence, psychometrics and behavioral science, health systems improvement, implementation science, qualitative research, health economics, epidemiology, geostatistics, biostatistics, rehabilitation, and community engagement.

 

Position Summary:

This position will provide administrative leadership to the Division of Translational Health Sciences and serve in a key operational leadership role for the department. It is responsible for the overall direction and implementation of research priorities for the Department of Emergency Medicine, including management of various functions such as research operations, personnel, space and facilities planning, research strategy and policy interpretation in support of the research mission.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

As administrator for the Division of Translational Health Sciences, this role will:

  • Act as senior advisor to the Division Chief of Translational Health Sciences – providing administrative and financial leadership, strategic thinking and business acumen to the division in the areas of Research, Educational Strategy, Finance, Business Development, Faculty and Staff Affairs, Human Resources, Facilities, and External Business Relations.
  • Provide direct oversight and management of THS operational and support staff – promoting professional growth and ensuring optimized workplace productivity.
  • Provide programmatic oversight and administrative accountability for the division in partnership with the Division Chief.
  • Plan division budget needs by analyzing program plans based on projected levels of support; collaborating with administration and faculty to identify goals and priorities.
  • Prepare reports and analyses to include financial reports, progress reports, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations and action plans.
  • Supervise and coordinate work of designated employees; manage personnel activities to meet business needs in compliance with University and department policies.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Duke Global Health Institute and Duke University School of Medicine leadership to create and implement business strategies.

 

 

Additionally, as research administrator for the Department of Emergency Medicine, this role will:

  • Serve in a key capacity on the central administrative team for the department.
  • Serve as the administrative lead representing the Department and working in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to develop high-value and sustainable initiatives for the Department’s research program.  
  • Provide direction and coordination to the development, interpretation and administration of current and long-range policies, procedures and programs associated with the department’s research mission.
  • Supervise and coordinate work of designated employees; manage personnel activities to meet business needs in compliance with University and department policies.
  • Guide and execute research strategy and research development plans across the department.
  • Analyze and monitor faculty academic productivity to ensure Departmental metrics are achieved and appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Lead the management of the Departmental Research Quality Management Plan components in conjunction with the school of medicine and departmental leadership.
  • Oversee and manage research-related faculty University effort allocations; serve as department administrator in SAP.
  • Provide oversight of the department’s service agreements with Duke Office of Clinical Research (DOCR), Research Administration Support Resource (RASR) and the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) to accomplish objectives and facilitate the resolution of issues.
  • Partner with Department’s Clinical Research Unit Research Practice Manager to align CRU activities with department-wide goals and strategy.
  • Maintain interface with external stakeholders, department leadership, faculty and staff to coordinate research activities, as well as recommend goals and priorities for strategic growth opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

 

 

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting or a closely related field.

 

Experience

 

Work requires a minimum of eight years progressively responsible OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE experience in administrative management, to include proficiency in budgeting, grants and contracts, personnel supervision and space and facilities management. A Master's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Accounting or a closely related field may substitute for two years of required experience.
