Job Summary
Coordinate and participate in the delivery of patient care in a Duke University ambulatory care site ensuring compliance with physician orders and established policies and procedures; assist the Health Center Administrator to identify and develop operational needs for the site to ensure effective patient care.
This position will support the clinical activities in the Center for Onco-Primary Care and the Supportive Care and Survivorship Center. These Centers are part of the Duke Cancer Institute and provide care along the continuum of cancer care, from cancer screening to survivorship or end-of-life or chronic cancer care.
The Nursing Coordinator will be responsible for providing direct and indirect care to patients and will be an integral member of this healthcare team.
The Nursing Coordinator will interface with cancer specialists and primary care clinicians to improve the timely transition to cancer care and the long-term outcomes of cancer survivors.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate and participate in the delivery of patient care ensuring compliance with physician orders and established policies and procedures; perform duties of staff nurse as necessary.
- Ensure timely scheduling of critical tests and procedures based on clinical assessment of patient acuity and need.
- Coordinate activities of nursing staff with other personnel and services engaged in caring for patients; advise other services of conditions or circumstances affecting plans for diagnosis, therapy or patient activity.
- Interface with patient and their relatives to provide instruction, promote participation in patient care and to coordinate nursing activities with family plans; initiate referrals to appropriate agencies as required. Interpret and implement safety practices; set standards for nursing staff and others involved in the maintenance of a clean clinic setting.
- Triage provider InBasket, responding to staff messages, results, and patient medical advice requests. Process provider orders for medical compression garments.
- Collaborate with New Patient Coordinator to review new patient referrals for appropriateness. This includes analyzing external hospital records, reviewing referring physician notes, and evaluating prior imaging and test results.
- Summarize new patient history in advance of new patient appointments, including pathology, treatment history, and last clinic note.
- Deliver negative lab or imaging results and triage patients back to primary care provider for routine screening.
- Plan, schedule and organize work for group ensuring proper distribution of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities; direct the requisition, care and maintenance of inventory, equipment and supplies.
- Maintain required patient records, reports and statistics for administrative purposes; ensure compliance with established clinic policies procedures, objective, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
- Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Assist the Health Center Administrator in determining the fiscal requirements of the clinic and in preparing budgetary recommendations.
- Supervise various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions and vacation schedules; coordinate a program of continual education and training for nursing staff.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Experience:
- 2 years Oncology RN experience is required.
Job Hours
Monday – Friday, 8am - 5pm
No weekends, no holiday and no call.
