General Description 
Perform, evaluate and coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice. Work performed in accordance with physician orders. Defined duties are performed in neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations in intermediate, intensive and emergency care areas. 
Job Duties
Perform all the duties and responsibilities of the Respiratory Care Practitioner Advanced. 
Administer Nitric Oxide Gas therapy. Administer Heliox gas therapy. 
Certified in Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) (Specific to pediatric and neonatal team). 
Facilitate emergency airway procedure. Implement clinical care protocols. 
Develop patient care plans for physician intensive care rounds. 
Provide orientation, education and training for Duke residents in assigned units. Provide orientation, education and training for Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP) and Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioners (ARCP). 
Provide patient and therapeutic assessments to assure optimal medical decisions. Review and revise policy, procedures and practice guidelines. Assist in the evaluation of products/equipment. Maintain environment and supply inventory of assigned unit. Function as alternate supervisor. 



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge necessary to make appropriate clinica l decisions and interaction relative to the specific age of a patient.
  • Skills validation/certification of competencies for the duties and responsibilities required for a RCP and ARCP.
  • Skills validation /certifications of competencies for the duties and responsibilities of this level. Must maintain annual skill maintenance requirements.
  • Must maintain annual safety/compliance requirements.
  • Must maintain North Carolina annual license requirements for CEUs.
  • Attendance at Just -in-Time supervisory training.
  • Work involves contact with patients of all ages, family members, physi cians, nursing, and all other members of the health care team.
  • Work is performed in all areas of Duke Hospital
  • Work may require lifting or pushing in excess of 30 pounds .
  • Required to carry emergency airway bag weighing approximately 20 pounds Work requires walking, running, climbing and bending.

Completion of a two-year AMA approved respiratory care program (As sociates Degree or the equivalent), with a bachelor’s degree preferred.




Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

North Carolina State Licensure

Registry (RRT) by the Nation al Association for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Required

Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) Preferred (Pediatric Team)

Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) Required

Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Required

Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Required

Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) Required 





Minimum Qualifications



Completion of a two year AMA approved respiratory care program (Associates Degreeor the equivalent), with a Bachelor Degree preferred.



Two years experience in clinical respiratory therapy, including one year experience in intensive care respiratory therapy and one year experience with Duke RCS. Five years of experience as Registered Respiratory Therapist in a Level 3 Neonatal ICU or higher or a Trauma 1 Pediatric Center is strongly preferred.
