Position Summary:
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Duke University is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Technician to join our research team. The successful candidate will play a central role in managing day-to-day operations of a dynamic laboratory and supporting research efforts in cancer biology and radiation science. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge translational research in a collaborative academic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Management and Operations
· Oversee daily lab operations and maintain an organized, efficient laboratory environment
· Manage laboratory inventory, ordering, and receiving of supplies and reagents
· Ensure proper functioning and maintenance of laboratory equipment
· Enforce safety and compliance protocols in accordance with institutional guidelines
Cell Culture and Molecular Biology
· Maintain and passage mammalian cell lines under sterile conditions
· Perform routine cancer biology and molecular biology techniques including:
o DNA/RNA/protein extraction and quantification
o PCR, RT-PCR, and quantitative PCR
o Gel electrophoresis and western blotting
o Plasmid cloning, bacterial transformation, and miniprep/maxiprep
o Cell infection/transfection/transduction
o Cryopreservation and revival of cell lines
o Cell counting and viability assays
o Flow cytometry and basic cell sorting procedures
Animal Colony Management
· Maintain a small mouse colony:
o Set up breeding cages and monitor litters
o Perform tail clipping, tattooing, and genotype progeny
o Wean and organize litters for experiments
· Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of animal inventory, breeding, and experimental use in accordance with IACUC protocols
Required Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field
· At least 1–2 years of prior hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in an academic or research setting
· Familiarity with aseptic technique, mammalian cell culture, and molecular biology protocols
· Experience working with laboratory animals (mice) is strongly preferred
· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
· Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team
· Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation
Anticipated Pay Range:
Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $18.69 to USD $28.28.
