Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of laboratory-based mouse- and cell-line-related technical duties, as well as neuroscience research experiments in support of the Russ Laboratory at Duke University.

Work Performed

Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in maintaining mouse lines for genetic and developmental neuroscience investigation, as well as pediatric tumor-related in vitro cell lines; conduct research laboratory tests, experiments, and determinations to obtain data for research purposes; compile, analyze, document, and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Confer with principal investigator (Dr. Russ) to review work assignments and develop plans for duties and experiments; establish and document new protocols and make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet experimental needs and goals. Review laboratory methods manuals, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.

• Maintain, manage, genotype, breed, and harvest mouse lines in accordance with the Duke Department of Laboratory Animal Research (DLAR) training and protocols.
• Set up and troubleshoot instruments, material, reagents, and apparatuses, as well as operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests.
• Obtain, prepare, mount, and stain mouse tissue and cell cultures for microscopic examination. Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
• Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
• Review work of lower-level laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in biology, neuroscience, chemistry, psychology, zoology or other directly related scientific field.

Experience

None required above education/training requirement, though prior hands-on laboratory-based molecular biology, mouse work, cell culture, and/or microscopy experience is encouraged.

Skills

On the job training is available. However, candidates with existing skills in mouse genotyping and breeding, cell culture, histology, and/or microscopy are encouraged.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $18.69 to USD $28.28.
