Research Technician
The Goetz lab in the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke University School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Research Technician II. Our lab investigates the regulation of neuronal signaling in development and specifically how a specialized signaling organelle, the primary cilium, contributes to neuronal connectivity during brain development.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, enthusiastic about science and research, and have excellent organizational skills. Prior research experience is required. Experience with cell culture and mouse husbandry is a plus, but is not required. We will consider candidates who are seeking a temporary position (minimum 2 years strongly preferred) before applying to graduate or medical school, as well as those looking for long-term technician positions.
Responsibilities include:
- Work on an exciting research project related ciliary signaling in neurons
- Performing routine cell culture, as well as specialized cell culture including neurons.
- Conducting biochemical, cellular and molecular biology assays, including Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence and microscopy
- Maintaining transgenic mouse colony (breeding, genotyping, record-keeping)
- Helping to monitor and maintain key equipment such as microscopes
- Assisting with placing orders and keeping the lab organized
- Helping to supervise undergraduate work-study and research students
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in life sciences
- Prior research experience in some area of biological sciences
- Willingness to work with mice
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and as part of a team
Preferred skills (not required):
- Mouse husbandry
- Cell culture
- Western blotting and immunoprecipitation
- Immunofluorescence and microscopy

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
