RESEARCH TECHNICIAN II

Haynes Lab – Duke Human Vaccine Institute

 

Responsibilities

Perform multiple duties in Dr. Barton Haynes’ laboratory using a variety of small animals as immunization models to study broadly neutralizing antibody responses for HIV vaccine development.

 

  • Perform hands-on procedures on a variety of small animal species, including rabbits, guinea pigs, and mice. Procedures may include, but are not limited to, observations for normal behavior, routine weighing, blood collection, identification, injections, euthanasia, organ harvests, sample processing, etc.
  • Process samples of various animal tissues for downstream assays, including flow cytometry, cell culturing, DNA extractions, histopathology, etc. and precise aliquoting and storage.
  • Distribute samples to various downstream teams, maintaining a trackable chain of custody throughout.
  • Assist with performing immunogen formulations, tracking and accessioning of immunogens/ adjuvants, organizing/storing animal tissue samples, and developing manifests for shipping samples to collaborating labs.
  • Understand and comply with all safety standards and procedures, including DHVI, DLAR, and Duke regulations, to insure a safe working environment for all laboratory staff and animals.
  • Execute and archive experiments in a manner that is scientifically justifiable, reliable and understandable to others.
  • Maintain detailed notes utilizing multiple formats (handwritten lab notebooks, electronic databases), understanding the critical need for precise record-keeping.
  • Keep lab equipment, chemical reagents and supplies in excellent order. Perform routine lab maintenance, cleaning, and organizing.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and precisely the experiments performed and the results of each.
  • Confer with supervisor and senior lab staff in helping to review and develop plans for animal immunization studies.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Principal Investigator or senior lab staff.

  • Must be detail-oriented, well organized with strong communication skills and ability to work in an interactive team environment.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level:

  • Education/Training: Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
  • Experience: None required above education/training requirement.
