RESEARCH TECHNICIAN II

Acharya Lab, Division of Structural Biology – Duke Human Vaccine Institute

 

We are seeking a Research Technician II to support operations in the Division of Structural Biology. The primary overall responsibility of the position will be to assist in the management of the X-ray crystallography suite, as well as in lab management and protein purification.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Assist in the day-to-day maintenance and operations of the X-ray crystallography suite.
  • Assist in setting up of crystallization experiments.
  • Assist in shipping crystals to the synchrotron and in data collection.
  • Monitor inventory and ensure necessary supplies of stock are available for continuity of scientific work; maintain other equipment as required.
  • Perform laboratory duties and maintain documentation for general lab operations - MSDS's, chemical inventories, waste disposal, autoclaving, etc. as required.
  • Assist in expression of proteins in commonly used systems (E coli, insect, mammalian).
  • Assist in purification of proteins for structural studies.
  • Maintain laboratory notebook and other documentation in an orderly and accurate fashion for tracking work progress, experiments, and results.
  • Provide a summary of written work updates and plans each week.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator and laboratory leadership.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Education/Training: Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
  • Experience: None required above education/training requirement OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Preferences

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team and to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Experience and interest in managing and maintaining equipment is desired.
  • Experience in protein expression, purification and biochemistry is desired.
