Research Scientist Position

Exposure Biology and Chemistry Laboratory (EBCL)

EBCL: Under the direction of Prof. Junfeng (Jim) Zhang, the Exposure Biology and Chemistry Laboratory at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been established to develop novel biomarkers of environmental exposure and health effects and to apply these biomarkers in human health effects studies.  The research conducted in the Laboratory focuses on the complex interactions between human host factors (genetic traits, health status, etc.) and environmental exposures (especially air pollution) in order to understand how risk factors affect human health at the individual and population levels.  As such, research outcomes are expected to help design more personalized prevention and intervention strategies to reduce the harmful effects of environmental hazard.


Position: One position is available now as Research Scientist (or Research Associate).   This position will be based at Duke University in Durham, NC and will collaborate with a counterpart at Dr. Zhang’s laboratory at Duke Kunshan University, Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, China.


Job Responsibilities: The main duty is to supervise and perform sample analysis using HPLC and HPLC-MS-MS. Other duties include assisting in the completion of grant proposals, assist other team members with data analysis, and performing light administrative duties. The position will be expected to contribute to innovation by identifying and exploring new methods of biomarker analysis and will have the opportunity to mentor graduate students. Qualifications:  A Master’s Degree in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or related field and at least 3 years of experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory is required; work experience will be waived for candidates with a doctoral degree in environmental health sciences, analytical/environmental chemistry, exposure science, or relevant field.


Beyond academic credentials, the ideal candidate will have strong skills in mass spectrometry (coupled with HPLC), data analysis, ability to handle multiple priorities, and be able to communicate effectively with collaborators and team members.
