Occupational Summary 

Perform a variety of complex and independent activities involved in planning, organizing and conducting research studies within the overall scope of a research project at Duke University. 

 

Fully grant funded: A One Year Appointment with possible renewal  

 

Work Performed 

  • Perform cell and molecular biology experiments  
  • General laboratory management  
  • Perform physiological and behavioral tests in rodents and humans  
  • Analyze data, prepare graphs and figures, present results in meetings  
  • Design experiments, write SOPs, train laboratory personnel on general procedures  
  • Perform and assist with surgeries, animal handling, transport, and care  
  • Dissect rodents and process biological samples  
  • Perform advanced histology, biochemical assays, and biophysics experiments 
  • Write IACUC and OESO protocols, maintain updated laboratory notebook and research records

Required Qualifications at this Level 

Education/Training 

Work requires a bachelor's degree in a field related to the specific position. 

Experience 

Work requires two years of experience in research/data analysis or related position. 

OR A MASTERS DEGREE IN LIEU OF EXPERIENCE 

Skills 

The ideal candidate will have:  

  • Knowledge, experience, and proficiency working with rodents 
  • Knowledge, experience, and proficiency with cell culture, molecular biology techniques (e.g., protein assays, mRNA, omics, site-directed mutagenesis, transfection), and biochemical assays 
  • Knowledge, experience, and proficiency in histology and microscopy 
  • General computer software, data analysis, and reporting skills (e.g., MS Office, GraphPad, JMP, R, Matlab) 
  • Willingness and ability to meet deadlines and work in a complex and fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to answer research questions and solve technical problems independently and with support from co-workers and supervisor 
  • Follow protocols, SOPs, and maintain documentation of laboratory and administrative procedures in an organized and reproducible manner 
  • Willing and able to learn and implement new techniques and adapt to the needs of research projects and laboratory 
  • Work independently and as a part of a research team
