Research Analyst I – Climate, Health, and Biodiversity Programs in Latin America and the Caribbean

 

 

Be You

 

We are seeking a proactive and highly organized Research Project Manager to oversee several large-scale interdisciplinary research initiatives addressing the impacts of climate and biodiversity change on human health in Latin America and the Caribbean. This role requires expertise in research coordination, stakeholder engagement, and project administration across international and multicultural environments. The successful candidate will work closely with principal investigators, postdoctoral researchers, and institutional partners to ensure effective implementation, monitoring, and communication of project activities.

 

Overview of (some) Projects:

1. Climate, Biodiversity, and Health Metrics Project:
Aims to develop integrated environmental and health indicators using Earth Observation (EO) data to inform policy under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, in collaboration with the InterAmerican Institute for Global Change Research (IAI).

2. Cross-Border Malaria Surveillance Project:
Focuses on expanding early warning and surveillance systems, modeling socio-economic networks and human mobility, and evaluating intervention strategies for malaria control across Peru, Ecuador, and Brazil.

3. Supporting Malaria Elimination in Central America

Works on the development, validation, and implementation of a malaria early warning system in Panama and Honduras.

Position Description

 

  • Project Coordination & Planning
    • Develop and manage work plans, timelines, and deliverables across both projects.
    • Coordinate activities across multiple institutions, countries, and disciplines.
    • Track progress and ensure timely submission of reports, milestones, and products.
  • Stakeholder and Partner Engagement
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for regional partners, including government agencies, academic institutions, and the IAI.
    • Facilitate workshops, stakeholder consultations, and transdisciplinary team meetings (virtual and in-person).
    • Support translation of scientific outputs into policy-relevant formats.
  • Data and Knowledge Management
    • Support collection, sharing, and archiving of research data, ensuring compliance with data-sharing agreements.
    • Assist with the creation of knowledge products, including dashboards, briefs, scientific manuscripts, and collaborative platforms.
  • Communications & Reporting
    • Coordinate internal and external communication efforts, including newsletters, updates, and public materials.
    • Contribute to grant reporting and liaise with funders as needed.
    • Maintain project documentation and organize publication timelines and authorship.
  • Budget and Logistics
    • Monitor project budgets and expenditures with institutional finance teams.
    • Coordinate travel, fieldwork, and event logistics, including international workshops or field data collection.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in a relevant field This position requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Health or Global Health). A master's degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred. 
  • Two years of experience in research/data analysis or a related position is required, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. A related master’s degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu two years of experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Either a Master’s degree or higher in public health, environmental science, international development, project management, or a related field, or 2-3 years of experience managing complex, multi-partner research or development projects.
  • Demonstrated experience working in Latin America or the Caribbean and/or with international research collaborations.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and cross-cultural team management skills.
  • Fluency in English and professional proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese (required).
  • Familiarity with scientific data types (e.g., health surveillance, EO, GIS) and stakeholder engagement in policy or public health contexts is highly desirable.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • PMP or other project management certification.
  • Experience with grant and donor reporting (e.g., NASA, NIH, or international funders).
  • Knowledge of climate, health, or biodiversity policy frameworks.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $50,439.00 to USD $76,417.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
