About Us

Duke Recreation & Physical Education is seeking enthusiastic and dependable individuals to join our team as Guest Services Attendants and Facility Monitors. We are looking for candidates who can commit to working 12–19.9 hours per week.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Basic computer proficiency

  • At least 1 year of customer service or public-facing experience

  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED, or willingness to obtain within 60 days

  • Availability to attend and participate in training sessions (typically 2 per semester)

  • Ability to engage with diverse populations

  • Strong independent judgment and problem-solving skills

  • Flexibility to work variable shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays

 

Job Responsibilities

Guest Services Attendant

  • Greet and assist members and guests entering or leaving the facility

  • Check members, guests, and visitors in and out of the facility

  • Monitor traffic flow at entrances and exits

  • Verify Duke ID cards and guest passes for access

  • Answer questions or refer patrons to the appropriate staff

  • Process guest registrations and supervise electronic waiver completion

  • Maintain the Lost & Found in an organized fashion

  • Confirm and review the daily indoor/outdoor reservations schedule

  • Issue and track loaned equipment

  • Promote a safe, clean, and inclusive facility

  • Support department goals for anti-racism and inclusion

  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Facility Monitor

  • Serve as backup for front desk and weight room staff

  • Routinely inspect doors, alarms, locker rooms, and restrooms

  • Ensure cleanliness of cardio areas and equipment

  • Enforce wristband policies and day locker rules

  • Monitor basketball courts and address policy compliance

  • Enforce all facility policies and procedures

  • Assist with check-ins during busy periods

  • Execute opening and closing procedures

  • Support emergency response efforts (e.g., accidents, weather events)

  • Assist with setup and support for events and rentals

  • Work collaboratively with all department staff

  • Promote and maintain a safe, inclusive environment for all patrons

  • Support anti-racism and inclusion efforts per Duke policies

 

Note: All new hires will be trained in both Guest Services Attendant and Facility Monitor responsibilities.

 

Compensation

Hourly Rate: $18.00 – $22.42
Final pay is determined by qualifications, experience, internal equity, and market factors.

Education

 

 

Work requires the ability to provide recreational assistance generally equivalent to a partial high school education.
