Occupational Summary

 

The Quad Advisor is a professional academic advisor supporting the success and engagement of first- and second-year students in Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. Assigned to a residential quad, the advisor provides proactive guidance on curriculum planning, academic policies, and institutional resources. The Quad Advisor plays a key role in helping students build a strong academic foundation while fostering a sense of belonging within the residential and academic community.

This position reports to a Senior Quad Advisor and works closely with faculty, deans, and campus partners to provide integrated academic support and programming.

 

Work Performed

 

Academic Advising and Student Support (60%)

  • Advise first- and second-year students on course selection, Trinity curriculum requirements, and major exploration.
  • Assist students in understanding academic policies, degree timelines, grading options (e.g., S/U, W), and related institutional regulations.
  • Monitor academic progress and maintain detailed, confidential advising records.
  • Guide students through moments of academic transition or difficulty, referring to relevant campus resources (e.g., deans, academic support, counseling services, identity centers).
  • Provide inclusive, developmentally appropriate support that considers the needs of diverse student populations.

Quad-Based Engagement and Programming (20%)

  • Support and contribute to quad-based initiatives such as orientation sessions, academic workshops, and community-building events.
  • Collaborate with faculty-in-residence, peer mentors, and faculty fellows to create programming aligned with quad themes and goals.
  • May teach a .5-credit course (e.g., first-year seminar or reflective advising course) as part of the residential experience.

Institutional Collaboration and Coordination (15%)

  • Work collaboratively with Academic Deans, Senior Quad Advisors, and campus offices (e.g., Global Education, Career Center, Student Affairs) to coordinate advising and support.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and cross-functional training to ensure consistent, high-quality advising services.
  • Share insights and trends with advising leadership to inform continuous improvement of the advising model.

Professional Development and Administrative Duties (5%)

  • Participate in professional development activities and advising-related training.
  • Contribute to assessment efforts, including surveys and feedback collection.
  • Stay informed about updates to university policies, academic programs, and student support initiatives.

 

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $59,829 to USD $88,740.00.  Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree required.

Experience:

  • At least two years of experience in academic advising, higher education, or a related student support setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of undergraduate curriculum structures and degree requirements
  • Strong understanding of academic departments/offices on campus and co-curricular opportunities.
  • Knowledge of Trinity College’s academic policies
