Duke Global Health Institute

 

Position Summary

The Program Director for Curricular & Student Affairs (AD) works within the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) to define and drive education administration and budgetary efforts related to curricula and student affairs across all degree programs (undergraduate major/minor, master’s degree in global health, graduate certificate program in global health). The AD leads the development and implementation of comprehensive academic advising and student engagement, ensuring outstanding support of the educational mission. The AD applies deep knowledge of higher education, brings outstanding communication and organizational skills, and uses quantitative and qualitative data to inform decisions. The AD works diplomatically to collaboratively design, create, and provide oversight to ongoing assessment and improvement of advising; seeking budget efficiency; and promoting administrative effectiveness. The AD works in a highly collaborative manner to represent the student perspective with faculty director(s), teaching faculty and key stakeholders, and to represent DGHI across Duke University to other administrative and program offices.

 

As an interdisciplinary institute with ties to both the University and Medical School, DGHI academic programs and administrative systems are inherently complex. This position reports to the Director of Academic Programs and is an integral member of the Education unit, which include a Senior Associate Director for Partner and Program Development, a Senior Program Coordinator for Graduate Admissions, two Student Services Coordinators, an Education Marketing Coordinator, and a Staff Assistant.

 

Detailed Responsibilities

Program Administration and Planning (50%)

  • Work collaboratively with director of undergraduate studies (DUS), director of graduate studies (DGS), and Director of Academic Programs to design, plan, and provide leadership and creative problem-solving for the education programs and activities for degree-seeking students from orientation through commencement within the global health major and minor, the Master of Science in global health (MS-GH), the global health graduate certificate, and Duke Kunshan University (DKU) visiting students.
  • Oversee the creation of yearly operations calendar and ensure that staff continue to follow and update calendar for efficient department functioning.
  • Oversee office staffing days/times to create an equitable staffing environment and ensure that student services are uninterrupted throughout the year.
  • Identify opportunities for input and relationship-building within the context of undergraduate and MS-GH advisory committees. Co-facilitate committee meetings.
  • Lead planning and implementation efforts to ensure the effectiveness of program-specific information regarding degree requirements, course registration, thesis requirements, TA hiring, and course evaluations.
  • Write new program proposals and on-going review of programs (e.g., graduate school review of MS-GH program, review of accelerated (4 +1) program, new accelerated MS GH program). Write annual program progress reports.
  • Organize education team retreats to enhance team communication, planning, and goal setting.
  • Update university bulletin, program manuals, policy manuals, and other publications in collaboration with DGHI and university-wide publication and communication efforts.
  • Actively participate in marketing and communication efforts for undergraduate programs, with support of DGHI communication team, including representing programs at university-wide events.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging trends in global health education to identify best practices. Contribute to local and national education and advising conversations and activities in the context of global health and the internationalization of education.

 

Courses and Curriculum (15%)

  • Oversee and manage curricular change efforts.
  • Advise faculty, staff, and leadership on curricular issues in coordination with faculty directors, senior associate director, and education team. Advise and assist faculty during the development and approval process for new courses.
  • Strategically communicate policies and deadlines which affect teaching and learning to students and faculty.
  • Review all course and study abroad petitions. Review all transfer credits. Recommend appropriate actions to the DUS and DGS.
  • Co-lead DGHI Competencies Working Group to develop program-wide global health competencies and ensure their application to global health courses.

 

Advising (10%)

  • Provide leadership on day-to-day student advising efforts.
  • Coordinate advising strategy, policies, and delivery of services.
  • Serve as primary advisor for Global Health Pathway Program for Residents and Fellows, and Global Health Graduate Certificate.
  • Liaise with Trinity College and The Graduate School (e.g., Duke Reach and other offices) to provide student support services and identify opportunities for collaboration, community, and coordination.
  • Represent DGHI as the primary contact for Global Education Office and Student Disability Access Office.
  • Oversee registration processes to deliver clear, accurate and timely information to students.
  • Oversee clearance for graduation clearances; ensure that students are on-track to graduate.

 

Student Affairs & Activities (5%)

  • Foster a student-centered environment to increase student engagement and sense of belonging within DGHI.
  • Lead planning of fall orientation events for MS-GH program.
  • Serve as primary expert on thesis policies and procedures for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Lead planning of commencement events for over 100 students and 500 guests in collaboration with Communications team.
  • Coordinate engaged processes for selection of graduation award nominations and speakers. Organize faculty and student awards nominations.

 

Personnel (10%)

  • Hire, train, and supervise up to three Student Services Officers/Coordinators (SSO/SSC), Staff Assistant and student workers.
  • Develop resources and provide support for academic advisors (SSOs/SSCs). Serve as a resource for policy clarification and application.
  • Lead bi-weekly advisors’ meeting to enhance team communication and ensure advisor consistency and accuracy. Facilitate team problem-solving and communication.

 

Finance and Budget (5%)

  • Monitor program budgets for undergraduate and graduate programs.

 

Assessment (5%)

  • Oversee assessment efforts for undergraduate and MS-GH programs, preparing year-end reports for Trinity College, The Graduate School, and DGHI internal reports.
  • Strategically identify program areas in need of review; gather, analyze, and refine data required to drive data-informed decision-making and communicate program needs, strengths and weaknesses. Prepare data-informed reports and analyses reflecting program progress with appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Maintain student data; provide student and enrollment data to DGHI administrators as requested.
  • Develop strategic and data-informed plans to ensure continuous improvement and effectiveness of DGHI’s educational programs in service to the students and teaching faculty in all DGHI programs.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education. Strong candidates will have experience in global health, international education, public policy, international development, or related area (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience)
  • Master’s degree required. Strong candidates will have a degree in global health, public health, public policy, psychology, organizational development, education, counseling, human resources, or related field (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience)
  • Proven record of working in a team-oriented, dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • History of commitment to working with students, supporting their development, and facilitating their success
  • Significant experience or expertise in project management, organization, and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Strong candidates will have experience living, working, or studying in international or cross-cultural settings.

Position is based in Durham, NC. Some domestic and/or international travel may be required.

 

 

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $ $60,328.00 to USD $ $94,000.00.
