OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
This Postdoctoral Associate position is supported by the T32 Nurse LEADS: Training in Nurse-LEd models of care Addressing the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) training grant supported through the National Institute of Nursing Research. The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct independent research activities under the guidance of faculty mentors in preparation for a full time academic or research career.
This appointment aims to support nurse scients to foster independent research programs focused on nurse-led models of care addressing SDOH using advanced analytics approaches through multiple strategies. Nurse LEADS builds upon a partnership with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

SUMMARY
- The Postdoctoral Appointee must be a registered nurse, have a PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g. DNS). Candidates with non-US degrees may be required to provide proof of degree equivalency.
- Proof of US citizenship or permanent residency is required.
- The term of the appointment is one year, with a one year renewal, for a maximum of two years (see Section 5 of the Postdoc Policy for length of appointment).
- The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, and may include teaching responsibilities.
- The appointment is generally preparatory for a full time academic or research career.
- The appointment is not part of a clinical training program, unless research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is the primary purpose of the appointment.
- The Postdoctoral Appointee functions under the supervision of a mentor and the Directors of the T32 Nurse LEADS program at Duke University School of Nursing.
EXPECTATION
Postdoctoral Fellows are required to further develop their research competencies through intense involvement in research training that is individualized to the fellow’s learning needs.
More specifically, the Postdoctoral Appointee is expected to:
- Devote 25% effort to working on their mentor’s research projects and 75% to their coursework and training
- Publish the results of research or scholarship during the period of the appointment (2 manuscripts as lead, 2 as co-author)
- Carry out a pilot research study
- Mentor pre-doctoral trainees
- Submit a grant application to NIH or equivalent
- The Fellow is required to make a good faith effort to apply for institutional and external fellowships and grants to support their research.
- Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research.
- Compliance with good scholarly and research practice.
- To develop, implement, and evaluate an individualized development plan (IDP) in partnership with mentors and T32 Directors.
- To attend monthly postdoctoral program seminars that are intended to integrate training program experiences.
- To attend research seminars sponsored by the School of Nursing’s Center for Research.
- To present research at a minimum of four nationally recognized research conference a year.
- Other training activities will include opportunities to participate in mentor’s ongoing research, to participate actively in an interdisciplinary research center on campus and/or other research training related activities.
- Postdoctoral Fellows must complete three T32 Nurse LEADS specific courses and may audit up to two additional School of Nursing courses per year.
- Open and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of the Postdoctoral Appointee's research activities and T32 Nurse LEADS Directors.
- Prompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the possession and desire to distribute materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and potentially patentable discoveries derived from the Postdoctoral Appointee's research.
- Collegial conduct towards members of the research group and others as described in the Duke University Honor Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies pertaining to other schools at Duke University.
- Compliance with all applicable University and departmental policies and procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT THIS LEVEL
Education/Training:
- RN or advanced practice nurse
- PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g. DNS) within the past 5 years of graduation
