General Description 


The pharmacy technician will be based at our Duke Regional Outpatient Pharmacy location. The ideal candidate will perform under supervision a variety of routine and advanced technical duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs in accordance with standard procedures and techniques. They must be able to balance efficiency with accuracy, work both independently and as a team in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must demonstrate excellence in customer service and teamwork while ensuring all medication needs and regulatory compliance standards are met. Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

  • Effectively follow workflow procedure with an in-depth understanding of each area (i.e., prescription receipt, data entry, pick-up, filling) for processing of patient medications. Deliver medications to patient care locations when appropriate (meds-to-beds program).
  • Provide leadership for the pharmacy technician group in the achievement of day-to-day tasks. Aids with helping the pharmacist staff coordinate technician staff and activities. When necessary, may assist in preparing schedules, setting work priorities and making work assignments as directed. Assist in the documentation of specific procedures and quality assurance activities under a pharmacist review in accordance with departmental, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Receive and triage information requests; research and provide information when and where appropriate. Refer other inquires to the pharmacist. Help oversees supply chain management, including adherence to inventory management/control procedures and the maintenance of non-Duke vendor inventory. Package medications as required for appropriate dispensing.
  • Remains flexible for scheduling needs while easily adapting to a challenging work environment.
  • Assist other technicians in performing complex procedures and/or calculations as required. Serve as a primary training resource for new technicians and assist with evaluating their progress as directed.
  • Manage personal responsibilities while being able to shift to help team members.
  • Proactively identifying and resolving potential problems to ensure patients have their medications when needed. Develops and implements solutions to problems.
  • Collaborates with immediate pharmacy team, insurance companies, and customers alike to resolve issues, ensure accuracy, and deliver a timely resolution of any medication or insurance related concerns
  • Prioritizing patient needs and displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure complete patient satisfaction
  • Actively seeks opportunities to expand clinical, technical and insurance knowledge.
  • Independently able to contact patients via phone to coordinate pick-up of medications to ensure medication compliance.
  • Complete and document all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly. Identify and replace outdated and unusable drugs. Monitor assigned quality improvement indicators of individual or departmental performance. Assure quality control in the provision of services.
  • Screen, interview and recommend technician applicants for employment.
  • Assist in staff development and skills maintenance activities.
  • Weekend day shifts possible as the service expands.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Experience:
Work requires a minimum of two years of experience as a pharmacy technician plus completion of advanced competencies checklist as documented and approved by the Department of Pharmacy.
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

 

Previous experience in an outpatient, retail/community pharmacy setting required.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
Pharmacy technician certification is required from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of drug names, basic math, and medical terminology
Excellent customer service skills including prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure patient satisfaction
Effective oral and written communication skills
Requires critical thinking skills with the ability to implement potential solutions after approval from the pharmacy manager and staff pharmacists
Highly organized with attention to detail
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Knowledge of Epic Willow Ambulatory Pharmacy computer system a plus
Bilingual (English, Spanish) speaking a plus
