General Description of the Job Class

As a member of the pharmacy leadership team, this manager is responsible for oversight of compounding and preparation of sterile medication products, clinical review of ambulatory medication orders, and management of multi-site clinic and infusion services. This manager has varied responsibilities, some of which are denoted below.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

  • Management of all aspects of day to day activities of the pharmacy infusion operations in Duke Cancer Center, Blood Cancer Center, Southpoint Oncology Clinic and future hospital based oncology infusion centers.
  • Responsible for scheduling, technology oversight, and inventory management to ensure safe and accurate sterile medication preparation.
  • Responsible for the supervision of team members, which consists of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, and ensures appropriate training of staff in their job functions.
  • Responsible for clinical review of ambulatory oncology and supportive care orders and associated verification.
  • Provides pharmacy staffing coverage in oncology infusion pharmacies, as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with nursing staff, supply chain, peers, and other healthcare professionals to achieve division, departmental, and institutional goals.
  • Coordinates division staff meetings, and ensures timely dissemination of information to staff through multiple avenues.
  • Ensures that division services and practices are in line with established policies and procedures, and assess compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g. TJC, BOP, DEA, USP), and best practice recommendations (e.g. ISMP).
  • Assists with Human Resources relevant matters, including, recruiting, promotion, retention and discipline.
  • Takes responsibility for personal and professional growth. Maintains relevant knowledge of regulations regarding sterile medication compounding, including updates to USP <797> and <800>.
  • Represents and supports the pharmacy department’s commitment to excellence through active participation on intra- and interdepartmental committees and teams.
  • Engages in educational activities, such as precepting of students and residents.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree OR BS Pharmacy Degree required
  • MBA or MS in Health System Pharmacy preferred.

 

Experience

  • Three years of pharmacy practice experience
  • Managerial/supervisor experience preferred
  • Experience in ambulatory oncology infusion strongly preferred.
  • Management experience, health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency, or equivalent post-graduate training preferred.
  • Board certification in Oncology Pharmacy preferred.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • Licensed Pharmacist or eligible to practice pharmacy in North Carolina
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form.
  • Extensive knowledge of drug products, medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states. Ability to work with information systems, automated and technical equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with various members of the health care teams.
  • Knowledge of practice standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Microsoft Office; Effective writing and communication; Data collection and analysis; personnel management experience.
