Organizational Description

 

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke is a learning community of more than 2,000 members and among the ten largest OLLIs in the Osher National Network of 125 OLLIs. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke seeks to engage the minds, elevate the spirit, and foster the well-being of our members through a wide range of educational programs and opportunities for volunteer service and social activities. We embrace Duke University’s commitment to community service and lifelong learning through our collaborative work with academic and professional groups, retirement communities, various research projects on aging, and other institutes for learning in retirement. We offer 200+ courses annually, both online and in-person, in addition to a variety of special programs and events to facilitate community building, social connection, volunteer/instructor recognition, and lifelong learning.

Occupational Summary


This position reports to the Associate Vice Provost, Learning Innovation & Lifetime Education (LILE). This position functions as the Program Director on the Adult Learning Team with in Duke Learning Innovation & Lifetime Education, providing oversight of the development and execution of educational programming for the mature adult learning community of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Working with staff, instructors, vendors, volunteers and campus and community program partners, the OLLI Program Director is responsible for ensuring the overall excellence and relevance of programming and developing campus and community partnerships.

 

This position supervises an Associate Director and works closely with other staff.

Work Performed

 

Strategic Oversight and Program Development

 

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for program offerings for mature adults, collaborating with the OLLI Advisory Council to ensure programming represents the interests of the OLLI learning community.
  • Build programmatic collaborations and partnerships with units across Duke University and the Triangle community.
  • Collaborate with Duke Alumni Engagement and Development and LILE's Marketing team to achieve strategic goals and drive engagement for in-person and online programs, including those offered at regional Duke facilities.

 
Community Outreach & University Relations

 

  • Build relationships with campus partners to feature Duke’s resources and innovative programs, top-notch researchers, and new initiatives in educational programs for OLLI members.
  • Serve as a resource and collaborator with key partners including Learning Innovation and Continuing Studies to develop new courses, certificate programs, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Represent OLLI in the Duke and Durham Community, and build programmatic collaborations with other units on campus and across the Triangle.
  • Collaborate with university-wide colleagues and serve as a liaison to other units of the University as appropriate.
  • Represent the OLLI team on committees and cross-functional teams within LILE.


Program Administration & Financial Management

  • Supervise the Associate Director to ensure the development of timely engaging programming and program execution and share supervisory responsibility for program coordinators as appropriate.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget, identify programmatic fundraising priorities, and coordinate fundraising efforts with Duke Development.
  • Assess staffing, classroom space needs, and financial operations related to development and delivery of OLLI program offerings, social activities, administration, and parking.
  • Oversee the evaluation and refinement of program offerings using comprehensive reports and data to improve course feedback, grow enrollment, and build engagement.
  • Serve as liaison with the National Osher Resource Center and manage compliance with the Osher Endowment Agreement.
  • Identify new classroom spaces within Duke and in the community to host OLLI programming.

 

OLLI Advisory Council

  • Manage, lead and leverage the talents of the OLLI Council to support the continued growth and excellence of programming, including scheduling and supporting four quarterly meetings.
  • Collaborate with the OLLI Advisory Council to identify and address the needs and concerns of the OLLI learning community.
  • Recognize and develop talent among the members of the OLLI Advisory Council.
  • Facilitate the recognition and appreciation of OLLI volunteers and instructors.

 
General Responsibilities/Department Support


•    Maintain a broad-based knowledge of university initiatives and current events. Explore and research trends in adult education and peer institutions to keep Duke current and on-trend.
•    Represent OLLI on the Adult Learning team and support the LILE team and AVP in the implementation of stated goals and strategies by participating in the development and expansion of adult learning programs.


•    Oversee all project-related administrative functions and use comprehensive information systems to record expenses, and program elements and manage payroll.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

 

Experience

 

Work requires four years experience in continuing education, OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. curriculum design, marketing,administrative management or business to acquire skills necessary to plan, develop and coordinate a variety of seminars, conferences, workshops and short courses.
