Work Performed

DEFINITION:The Postd oguidance of a facultymentor in preparation for a full time academic orC andidates with non-US degrees may be required toprovide proof of degree equivalency.1. A candidate may also be appointed to a postdoctoral posit ion if thecandidate has completed all of the requirements for a degree b ut thedegree has not been formally conferred: in this case, the candidat e maypresent evidence of completion of the degree requirements, together witha statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be confe rred.If the degree is not conferredby this projected date, the postdoct oralappointment may be terminated.2. Note for international candidates: Generally, immigrationclassifications (e.g., H-1B, J-1, etc.) requiretha t the requisitedegree be conferred before a petition can be filed ora visa documentissued to sponsor the individual.The term of the appointment is limited (see Section 5 of the PostdocPolicy for length of appointment ).The appointment involves substantially full-time research orscholarshi p, and may include teaching responsibilities.The appointment is generall y preparatory for a full time academic orresearch career.The appointment is not part of a clinical training program, unlessresearch training und er the supervision of a senior mentor is theprimary purpose of theappoin tment.The Postdoctoral Appointee functions under the supervision of a me ntoror a department at Duke University.The Postdoctoral Appointeeis expe cted to publish the results of his orher research or scholarshipduring t he period of the appointment.EXPECTATION:The conscientious discharge of research or scholarship responsibilities,which may include teaching resp onsibilities for Postdoctoral AssociatesConformance to standardsof respo nsible conduct in researchCompliance with good scholarly and research pr acticeMaintenance of a laboratory notebook and/or other comparaersity up onterminationAdherence to University standards regarding use ofble recor ds ofresearch activity, which remains the property of Duke Univisotopes, chemicals,infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and thelikeOpen a nd timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets ofthePostdocto ral Appointee's research activities.
