DEFINITION:The Postdoguidance of a facultymentor in preparation for a full time academic orC andidates with non-US degrees may be required toprovide proof of degree equivalency.1. A candidate may also be appointed to a postdoctoral posit ion if thecandidate has completed all of the requirements for a degree b ut thedegree has not been formally conferred: in this case, the candidat e maypresent evidence of completion of the degree requirements, together witha statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be confe rred.If the degree is not conferredby this projected date, the postdoct oralappointment may be terminated.2. Note for international candidates: Generally, immigrationclassifications (e.g., H-1B, J-1, etc.) requiretha t the requisitedegree be conferredbefore a petition can be filed ora visa documentissued to sponsor the individual.The term of the appointment i s limited (see Section 5 of the PostdocPolicy for length of appointment) .The appointment involves substantially full-time research orscholarship , and may include teaching responsibilities.The appointment is generally preparatory for a full time academic orresearch career.The appointment is not part of a clinical training program, unlessresearch training unde r the supervision of a senior mentor is theprimary purpose of theappoint ment.The Postdoctoral Appointee functions under the supervision of a men toror a department at Duke University.The Postdoctoral Appointeeis expec ted to publish the results of his orher research or scholarshipduring th e period of the appointment.EXPECTATION:The conscientious discharge of r esearch or scholarship responsibilities,which may include teaching respo nsibilities for Postdoctoral AssociatesConformance to standardsof respon sible conduct in researchCompliance with good scholarly and research practiceMaintenance of a laboratory notebook and/or other comparaersity upo nterminationAdherence to University standards regarding use ofble record s ofresearch activity, which remains the property of Duke Univisotopes, chemicals,infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and thelikeOpen an d timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets ofthePostdoctor al Appointee's research activities. Postdoctoral Appointeesare encourag ed to consult the AAMC Compact Between PostdoctoralAppointees and Their Mentors for suggested guidelines for thePostdoctoral Appointee-mentor re lationshipPrompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the possession and d esire todistribute materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and pote ntiallypatentable discoveries derived from the PostdoctoralAppointee'sre search.Collegial conduct towards members of the research group and other s asdescribed in the Duke University School of Medicine Honor Code ofPro fessional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies pertaining tootherschools at Duke University.Compliance with all applicableUniversity and departmental policies andprocedures.
