Summary
Responsible for preventing and controlling conduct that threatens life and property, including serious crimes.
Key Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with community members, supervisors, and peers.
- Demonstrate empathy and care for both Duke community members and non-members, treating all individuals with dignity, respect, and fairness.
- Uphold constitutional rights and ensure the safety of all individuals in every encounter.
- Utilize de-escalation techniques to manage volatile, violent, or threatening situations while maintaining composure, empathy, and impulse control.
- Resolve conflicts between individuals, groups, or between citizens and the University or government entities.
- Maintain physical fitness in accordance with the Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT), which includes:
- Standing for extended periods indoors or outdoors
- Running in response to emergency calls
- Climbing stairs and ladders
- Performing CPR and assisting in lifting or carrying individuals
- Handling equipment such as fire extinguishers (up to 40 lbs), traffic control tools, and breaching tools
- Effect arrests through compliance or appropriate use of force, and serve civil or criminal warrants.
- Protect individuals in danger, including those who are intoxicated, mentally ill, physically disabled, elderly, or minors.
- Assist victims and affected individuals in returning to normalcy after a crime or incident by providing referrals to appropriate resources and implementing crime mitigation strategies.
- Conduct preliminary investigations and write detailed reports for both criminal and non-criminal incidents. Ensure proper documentation and follow-up as necessary.
- Provide testimony in legal proceedings, including criminal and civil court cases, employee grievance hearings, and student conduct hearings.
- Direct and manage motorized, non-motorized, and pedestrian traffic, including conducting traffic stops, checkpoints, and safety inspections.
- Support special events such as sporting events, concerts, and public demonstrations, often requiring work outside of regular hours.
- Engage proactively with the community to identify and address potential issues, build relationships, and foster trust between the police department and the public.

Compensation & Benefits
Anticipated Pay Range:
- $28.37 – $45.19 per hour
- Salary is determined based on experience, education, skills, and market considerations.

Education
Associate degree, Bachelor's degree preferred. Work requires comprehensive and communication skills normally acquired through a high school education. Work requires a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement certification, as well as a North Carolina Campus Police certification or certification eligibility.
Experience
Work requires no prior experience and requires a minimum age limit of 20 years. Work also requires a North Carolina driver's license. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE .
