Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Planning & Design, the Planner/Architect will provide facilities planning, space planning and capital planning services on a variety of projects for Duke University.
The Office of Planning & Design is responsible for facilitating planning efforts and design oversight for all of Duke University’s new construction, renovations, infrastructure upgrades and major building maintenance initiatives. The Office consists of a professional staff with experience and backgrounds in campus planning, architecture, space planning, landscape architecture, CAD and GIS.
With a high level of accountability, the Planner/Architect will meet with user groups on campus to develop programs, test-fits and conceptual plans/layouts of needs within on and off-campus buildings. The Planner/Architect will also coordinate with consultants and contractors to develop conceptual budgets and schedules for implementing projects. .
Overview of Key Responsibilities:
- Works with user groups, departments and management to obtain information and develop an understanding of space needs
- Develops programs, test-fits and conceptual layouts for academic or administrative departmental space needs on campus.
- Initiates and distributes questionnaires and surveys to collect program and space data for on and off campus departments.
- Applies space utilization metrics and best practices to assess academic and administrative space.
- Applies knowledge of applicable building and accessibility codes to test fits and conceptual layouts.
- Ensures that all new projects are in compliance with the University Master Plan.
- Supports established working groups and committees in regards to project planning.
- Keeps relevant of current trends, pedagogy and best practices in planning.
- Assesses information to analyze current space and campus planning. Makes recommendations to integrate into master plan, strategic plan and facilities planning issues.
- Conducts space utilization studies for campus clients.
- Assists the Director of Planning & Design, University Architect and the Director of Project Management with the selection of planning and design consultants.
- Performs related duties as required
General Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, planning, interior design or related field.
- Min 4-6 years of relevant experience.
Specific Skills and Competencies:
- Demonstrated knowledge of programming, space planning, design, and master planning in a university setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of space utilization metrics and best practices.
- Thorough knowledge of AutoCAD, Indesign/Adobe Suite, MS Office Suite and other related software systems.
- Strong graphic skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with faculty, staff, internal clients, and external consultants and authorities.
- Excellent written skills and the ability to draft documents, memos and reports.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires an Associate's degree in Drafting, Architecture, Design or a related field to develop appropriate technical skills and analytical abilities.
Experience
Work requires five years of progressively responsible experience in OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE drafting, architecture, design and/or project management to include job estimating and project programming. A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Design may offset two years of required experience.
