As an Occupational Health Nurse with Employee Occupational Health & Wellness (EOHW), you'll play an important role in protecting and promoting the health, safety, and well-being of Duke employees. Working alongside occupational health providers and interdisciplinary partners, you'll deliver high-quality clinical care, education, and support that helps employees stay healthy and thrive at work.
In this role, you'll combine your clinical expertise, compassion, and problem-solving skills to provide occupational health services in a collaborative environment focused on employee wellness and workplace safety.

As an Occupational Health Nurse, you'll deliver comprehensive occupational health services that support employees across Duke Health and Duke University. You'll utilize evidence-based practices, clinical judgment, and strong collaboration skills to help maintain a healthy workforce.

What You'll Do

Provide Occupational Health Clinical Care
  • Deliver occupational health nursing services at Employee Occupational Health & Wellness clinics.
  • Conduct health assessments, surveillance programs, and wellness screenings.
  • Perform audiometric testing, vision screenings, respirator clearance examinations, and spirometry testing.
  • Administer adult immunizations and provide follow-up care related to bloodborne pathogen and communicable disease exposures.
  • Evaluate and manage workplace injuries and exposure incidents.
  • Support fitness-for-duty evaluations and employee return-to-work processes.
Conduct Employee Screening & Testing
  • Perform pre-employment, random, and post-incident drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ensure proper specimen collection, documentation, chain-of-custody procedures, and testing compliance.
  • Operate and maintain occupational health testing equipment, including audiometers, spirometers, and point-of-care testing devices.
  • Perform nasopharyngeal specimen collection and assist with employee self-swab procedures.
Support Employee Wellness & Education
  • Educate employees on health screening results, preventive care, and wellness initiatives.
  • Provide individualized health counseling and guidance.
  • Promote employee participation in health maintenance and wellness programs.
  • Contribute to patient and staff education initiatives that strengthen occupational health outcomes.
Collaborate Across the Occupational Health Team
  • Partner with occupational medicine physicians, industrial hygienists, safety professionals, and clinic leadership.
  • Communicate clinical concerns and employee health issues requiring escalation or follow-up.
  • Support implementation of occupational health policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Assist colleagues and support operations across EOHW clinic locations as needed.
Maintain Quality, Compliance & Documentation
  • Utilize Epic and REDCap systems to document care, manage employee records, order laboratory testing, and support patient workflows.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee health records in accordance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
  • Collect, label, and process laboratory specimens according to established protocols.
  • Implement infection prevention and environmental cleaning practices that support workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
Advance Professional Excellence
  • Participate in continuing education activities to maintain current occupational health knowledge.
  • Contribute to quality improvement efforts and operational excellence initiatives.
  • Provide clinical support and guidance to team members while promoting a culture of safety and service.

What You'll Bring

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), or Nursing Diploma from an accredited program.
  • Current North Carolina Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
  • Six months of nursing experience.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Occupational health, employee health, urgent care, ambulatory care, or public health experience.
  • Experience performing health screenings, immunizations, and surveillance programs.
  • Familiarity with Epic, REDCap, and electronic medical record systems.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $64,280.00 to USD $101,343.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
