Job Summary

The Occupational Health Technician is responsible for delivering high-quality occupational health clinical services to employees in the RTP and surrounding areas. This role includes administering routine vaccinations, performing specimen collection and testing, managing compliance-based screenings (such as fit testing and audiometry), and supporting the clinic through administrative and clerical tasks.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Administer routine vaccinations per protocol.
  • Collect blood specimens via venipuncture.
  • Perform drug screenings in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens; perform basic lab tests on-site.
  • Explain procedures to patients and prepare them for exams.
  • Change sterile/non-sterile dressings as directed.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, vision screening, TB testing, vaccine administration, and color vision testing.
  • Manage and perform fit testing for N95, half face, and full face masks (including equipment calibration and documentation).
  • Schedule and coordinate annual audiograms and fit testing sessions.
  • Maintain appropriate clinical inventory and stock exam rooms.
  • Ensure all clinical documentation is accurate and compliant with regulatory and clinic standards.

Clerical and Administrative Duties

  • Greet patients and assist with check-in and check-out processes.
  • Answer phones, respond to messages, and relay clinical information as appropriate.
  • Assist with data entry, appointment scheduling, and coordination of follow-up visits.
  • Maintain and organize confidential health records in electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • File and track vaccine records, lab results, fit testing data, and audiometry results.
  • Prepare and scan documents into patient charts.
  • Support staff with administrative tasks related to clinic operations, reporting, and supplies.
  • Maintain clinic forms, logs, and required documentation for internal and regulatory review.
  • Plan and execute the distribution of reports and information as required.
  • Advise clinic leadership as to the status of current activities and additional or expanded program requirements; make recommendations for solution to problems identified.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical workflows.
  • Proficiency in clinical procedures such as venipuncture, vaccine administration, and specimen collection
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and standards related to audiometry, respiratory protection, and drug testing
  • Experience using electronic medical records (EMRs) for clinical documentation and tracking
  • Ability to perform and interpret point-of-care testing (e.g., vision, hearing, TB, and color vision tests)
  • Basic knowledge of infection control practices and standard precautions
  • Ability to maintain clinical inventory, manage biohazardous materials, and adhere to safety protocols

Education & Certification (One of the Following is Required)

Option 1: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • Completion of a state-approved and accredited EMT education program
  • Certified as a North Carolina EMT

OR

Option 2: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

  • Graduate of an accredited LPN program
  • Current license to practice in the state of North Carolina

OR

Option 3: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

  • Graduate of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Medical Assistant program
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certification by AAMA or AMT required (AAMA preferred)

A college degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is preferred.


Experience

  • No minimum experience required beyond educational/certification requirements.
  • 1–3 years of relevant clinical and/or administrative experience in an occupational health, urgent care, or similar environment preferred.

 

Anticipated Pay Range:

 

 

Duke U niversity provides an annual base salary range for thisposition as USD $ 18.00 to USD $24.89.
