Positional Summary

Serves as the nutritional expert for Duke Dining, leading the development and execution of inclusive educational and nutritional programs. This position supports the health and well-being of the Duke community through targeted initiatives that address special dietary needs and food allergies. Acts as a liaison between Duke Dining, the Wellness Center, and Student Health, while providing direct support to students, staff, and faculty through outreach, policy development, and dining program evaluation. Manages interns, supports CBORD nutrition systems, and ensures compliance with FARECheck and other institutional guidelines.

 

Key Position Duties

Student Nutrition Support & Outreach – 30% of Effort

· Provide one-on-one nutrition counseling for students with food allergies, special diets, or other dietary concerns.

· Communicate with students and families/guardians to ensure needs are understood and met.

· Collaborate with Student Wellness to plan nutrition-related events and awareness campaigns.

· Support students in navigating dining locations and making informed food choices.

Dining Program Collaboration & Policy Development – 25% of Effort

· Act as a liaison between Duke Dining and campus health services.

· Work with vendor culinary teams to revise menus for nutritional balance and allergen safety.

· Oversee allergen labeling, Ask Me allergen program compliance, and FARECheck certification standards.

· Develop and refine Duke Dining policies related to nutrition and dietary inclusivity.

Nutrition Education & Communication – 20% of Effort

· Design and implement campus-wide nutrition messaging campaigns.

· Deliver workshops and informal presentations to students, staff, and faculty.

· Benchmark industry and peer institution trends to ensure Duke Dining’s programming remains current.

· Utilize websites, social media, and digital platforms to engage the community.

Program & Intern Oversight – 15% of Effort

· Supervise nutrition student interns and oversee related projects.

· Evaluate project outcomes and provide mentorship and feedback.

· Collaborate with other university departments for multi-disciplinary programming.

· Review menus and recipes for nutritional accuracy and recommend improvements.

CBORD and Technical Support – 5% of Effort

· Provide CBORD nutrition system support; review menus, recipes, and ingredient data.

· Serve as a backup to the CBORD Manager when needed.

· Evaluate nutrition data outputs and make system improvement suggestions.

Other – 5% of Effort

· Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or director to meet departmental and university goals.

 

Anticipated Pay Range

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $58656,00 to USD $90,000.  Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Training

Work requires bachelor's degree in dietetics/nutrition and American Dietetics Association (ADA) registry.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of four years of related experience.

 

Strongly Preferred Experiences:

· Experience working with food allergies and dietary restrictions in a foodservice setting

· Experience supervising students or interns

· Experience with CBORD or other foodservice management systems

· Experience with public speaking, nutrition education, and wellness outreach

Preferred Skills and Competencies:

· FARECheck Trainer Certification (or willingness to complete)

· Strong software skills for nutrition analysis, digital communications, and social media

· Ability to collaborate with diverse departments and external partners

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Competency in cultural humility, wellness promotion, and inclusive practice
