Occ Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care supp ort partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurs e (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coo rdination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform basic c are andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popula tionneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected toa ssist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individual isexpe cted to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy ofever y patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpatient care. They are expected to know andadhere to all basic policiesand proc edures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They are ex pected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral unit u pkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed, w ith or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurate ver bal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.Perform a variety of clerical duties inv olved in preparing, maintaining,andprocessing patient, unit(s) and hosp ital data and records to includeoperating the organization's patient car e information systems.Individuals in this role are typically scheduled f or NCA I shifts atminimum 25% of the time.
Work Performed</h 3>
Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures an dprovide manual assistance as required.Obtain and record patient data fo r medical records noting and informingRN/LPN of information collected.Ad minister treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,bu t not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nailca re, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, andbowel a nd bladder elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients.Participate in teach ing activities by reinforcing teaching instructed byRN and/or providers as needed.Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by help ingposition patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patient s.Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andr eport any changes in patient's condition. Turn and position patients,set up and feed patients as necessary, provide patients with freshdrinking water.Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriatetr aining, document and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Followstandard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.Collect, deliver and conduct routine t ests on patient specimens. Cleanassigned area; stock and replenish suppl ies and equipment as required.Participate in own professional developmen t by maintaining requiredskills validation and attending educational off erings. Support thedevelopment of other staff and formal learners.May al so perform clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.Perform a variety of clerical tasks involved in operating theorganization's patien t care information system. Acknowledgeorders onEMR task list, verify pr intout and input verified orders to requestdiets, treatments, nursing se rvices, equipment and diagnostic andlaboratory tests and procedures.Asse mble and maintain patient charts from admission through discharge.Prepar eand upload paper documents into the electronic medical record(EMR).Nav igate electronic medical record, access patient information, generaterep orts, schedule appointments and manage task list.Assign nursing staff to communication systems.Perform other related duties incidental to the wo rk described herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.Working knowledge of sanitati on, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions applicable t o work in a hospital.Working knowledge of the organization and physical layout of thehospital.Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safetyprecautions.Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walkin g.This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending,k neeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Theemployee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over35 pound s with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.Ability to understand an d follow oral and written instructions.Ability to document and communica te pertinent information using computerand/or paper documentation tools. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships withpa tients and hospital staff.Working knowledge of principles and practices of providing non-professional bedside patient care.Pre-employment Physic al Capacity Testing may be required.
