Duke Pediatric Infectious Diseases – Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center – 2301 Erwin Road – Durham NC;

 

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider in our Pediatric Infectious Diseases Inpatient Service located in (Durham, NC) to work in collaboration with attending physicians, collecting and documenting data, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and scheduling laboratory studies and professional consultations, and providing direct patient care services. This Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key provider of care for infants, children, and youth seen for consultation on the Pediatric Infectious Diseases service.  In consultation with an attending physician, this provider provides diagnostic and treatment recommendations to the primary service for acutely ill or hospitalized patients with a variety of infections including lung, bone, joint, and skin infections. It is appropriate for the APP to provide care for an aging pediatric patient beyond the age of 21 who is admitted to a Pediatric service. This provider may additionally see patients in an outpatient clinic when indicated.  This position is primarily Monday – Friday, 8 hours per day (7a-4p or 8a-5p), and does not require nights/weekend/holiday coverage.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with attending physician(s), the NP/PA performs triage, physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care of patients, and provides direct patient care services. 
  • Analyze clinical practice patterns so as to provide the best medical care and to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to supervising MD, nursing staff, patient resource manager, home health agency, and other relevant healthcare providers.
  • Provide timely documentation in the electronic medical record of all relevant data including results of diagnostic tests; laboratory results; patients’ condition and response to therapies/interventions; communications with physician colleagues.
  • Evaluate patients on the Pediatric Infectious Diseases service by taking medical histories, performing physical exams, reviewing previous diagnostics, recommending appropriate diagnostic studies, and therapeutics in consultation with the primary service.
  • Provide consistency and support for patients through attendance at multidisciplinary medical rounds, meetings, and patient-centered conferences, as well as directing communication with patients and other Peds ID team members as part of a health care team.
  • Coordinate follow up care after hospitalization
  • Prescribe and administer drugs and medical devices as stipulated by the NC BON or NC BOM.
  • Communicate with referring physicians, clinics, community support agents, etc. concerning patient visits and other significant events through chart notes, letters, and telephone calls.
  • Work with other team members to adequately address psychosocial issues.
  • Support research efforts of the Duke Pediatric Infectious Diseases group by maintaining a working knowledge of current protocols.
  • Participate in the education of professionals, patients, families, and community groups regarding Pediatric infectious diseases.
  • Act as a preceptor to medical, PA and NP students rotating through Pediatric Infectious Diseases service.
  • Assist with the education of other visiting students, residents, and fellows.
  • Assist with other Pediatric Infectious Diseases team related functions as needed.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • PA:  Bachelor’s degree or higher required. Must be licensed by the North Carolina Medical Board, and be Board Certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • NP: Master’s degree or higher required. Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina and Approval to Practice by the Board of Nursing. Must be Board Certified from a national certifying board in the appropriate patient foci.  BLS required.
