Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider in our Duke Onco-Psychiatry Clinic located in Durham, NC to provide medication management and supportive therapy to cancer patients throughout their treatment journey - during active treatment, remission, recovery, and palliative care. The ideal candidate understands the complexities of working with medically ill patients in a healthcare/academic environment and delivers care in a compassionate, cooperative manner. 

 

Primary hours will be Monday through Friday, day shift, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients. Schedule will include nine outpatient sessions with flex time for inpatient consultations.

 

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete diagnostic evaluations and ongoing medication management within a multi-disciplinary environment. 
  • Assess psychiatric symptoms, perform safety assessments, and provide specialized consultation in outpatient and inpatient oncology settings. 
  • Prescribe treatments and medications for quality psychiatric care
  • Manage psychiatric medications, including ordering appropriate refills
  • Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations and document findings
  • Write detailed progress notes and treatment summaries
  • Complete safety assessments and develop safety plans when necessary
  • Develop therapeutic relationships with patients
  • Establish collaborative relationships with family members and caregivers to support patient care
  • Provide education and resources to patients and caregivers regarding psychiatric aspects of cancer care
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, therapists, and Oncology providers
  • Practice under the supervision of the Medical Director with regular case reviews and clinical guidance
  • Participate in supervision meetings to ensure coordinated patient care and professional development

 

Job Eligibility Requirements

 

Education           

  • Nurse Practitioners:  Work requires completion of an accredited MSN or DNP Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Physician Assistants:  Work requires completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.

 

Certification 

  • PMHNP, FNP, or PA-C.
  • BLS required.

 

License                

  • Nurse Practitioners:  Must have current or compact RN licensure & NP approval to practice in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required.
  • Physician Assistants:  Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. BLS required.

 

Experience          

  •  1+ years minimum experience as a PMHNP, FNP, or PA in psychiatric/mental health setting.  Experience working with medically ill patients preferred.  Experience in healthcare and/or academic environment preferred. 

 

Job Hours
