Job Location
Hybrid position
- This position will be 50% inpatient in-person consults and 50% outpatient telehealth visits.

Job Summary
The Duke Smoking Cessation Program is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to provide medical care for adults who require tobacco use treatment in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The APP will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health care team to provide direct patient care services for patients with the supervision of the Medical Director of the Duke Smoking Cessation Program.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Record details of pertinent history, history of smoking-related illnesses, past medical, family and social history, surgical history and planned surgeries.
- Perform physical examinations in inpatient and outpatient settings
- Perform in-clinic procedures including spirometry and CO monitoring.
- Establish and develop treatment plan (in conjunction with Supervising Physician as needed)
- Prescribe appropriate medications
- Work closely with behavioral health and social work to address additional psychiatric and social barriers to smoking cessation.
- Patient and family teaching as appropriate
- Order appropriate labs, radiologic tests and procedures and follow up with patient as needed
- Coordinate care and refer to other medical professionals as needed
- Document clinic, telehealth, and other patient encounters in the Epic (Maestro) system
- Review outside records including clinic notes, hospital records, outside imaging, lab, and other test results
- Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by the supervising physician
- Liaise with members of the Duke Center for Smoking Cessation clinical research team to identify patients for research purposes
- Participate in enrollment of patients in clinical research studies
- May make work assignments for assigned nursing and technical personnel; review the work of other staff; train new personnel.
- Participate in teaching medical students, nursing students, physician assistant students, and other health professionals in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care
PA: Graduate of accredited Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program
Certification
NP: Any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.)
PA: PA-C
Both: Certified as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) or eligible for certification, including being at least 6 months tobacco free and remaining tobacco free for the duration of employment.
Licensure
NP: Must have unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as NP
PA: Must have unrestricted license issued by the NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA
Both: Federal and State DEA independent license with prescriptive authority
Experience:
Both: APP experience preferred but not required. New Grads welcome to apply.

Monday – Friday, 8am - 5pm
