Brief overview: The job will be in-person at the Duke Marine Lab from early May through beginning of August. This position will work with Liz Demattia, the DukeEngage site coordinator (and DukeEngage students), and the Community Engagement Fellows, and help run and manage the Community Science Initiative’s summer programs and research. This would include (but not be limited to): managing the STEM Pathways program (a high school mentoring and outreach program), managing DUML summer camps, working with researchers on the resilience curriculum, and assisting with resiliency community events and workshops. The position can also help with other projects as time and personal interests allow.  

   

Full job description: Program manager for Community Science Initiative’s STEM Pathways programs. It is a full-time position that is based in community engagement and positive youth development.  

  • The work will start in May as prep-work (start flexible). We begin training of the high school students the second week of June, and then run programs until the beginning of August. After the programs end there is some work on getting everything organized for the next year.  

  • This position will manage and oversee the STEM Pathways programs. This would include training high school students in hands-on mentoring, running hands-on STEM programs, overseeing/creating the high school outreach schedules, organizing/running fun “research activities” with the high school students at the marine lab (oyster farm trips, whale ID trips, Cape Lookout excursion, etc.), developing outreach activities, and more.  

  • This job requires strong communication and organizational skills as well as the ability to connect with youth of all ages.  

  • The work also includes collaborating with the Community Engagement Fellow on research and programming surrounding resilience, water quality, and restoration.  

  • Rate of pay is $16.50 per hour. It is fulltime work in June and July and can be flexible in May and August.  

  • Job locations are off campus in Carteret County, so you will need to be able to drive (i.e. have an active driver’s license). We will have a DUML rental car for this program for the summer – so you will need to complete Duke’s Defensive Driving course. Fuel costs will be covered.

Anticipated Pay Range:

 

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $16.50 to USD $16.50.
