The Nursing Information System Specialist (NISS) II has expert knowledge of a specific clinical discipline and advanced knowledge of information technology and its applications to healthcare. The NISS II applies best practices to the management of the clinical information system life cycle.

This position’s primary function is to develop educational materials and conduct training sessions for clinicians on Duke Health’s electronic health record (EHR) and other informatics platforms.  Areas of focus include:

  • Inpatient Nursing
  • Perioperative Nursing
  • Anesthesia providers

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

In addition to NISS I essential responsibilities/duties, the NISS II will analyze, design and research clinical information systems and processes. Liaise between clinical and technical departments regarding EHR innovations. Make oral and written presentations to project teams and other departments. Conduct new employee training. Support and maintain EHR training environment.  Coordinate simple to complex projects with direction. Optimize departmental and interdisciplinary resources to maximize team efficiency. Develop educational materials for EHR build changes, upgrades and new workflows. Identify areas for procedural improvements. Assist colleagues with the creation of eLearnings.  Publish and upload eLearning content into the Learning Management System. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:                        BSN required along with coursework in mathematics, computer science or a computer-related field.

Experience:                      Work requires experience equivalent to five years of clinical nursing experience; and three years of information system management which includes participation as member of a development team supporting a major information system.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required. BLS required by the end of orientation period. MSN in Informatics or Education preferred.

Patient Care Technology Education position-specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Previous experience as clinical informatics trainer teaching EHR documentation to clinicians or previous educational development experience

•     Required to hold a valid NC Registered Nursing License and maintain the appropriate competencies and education for continued licensure while in the NISS role.

•     Leverages nursing training, knowledge and experience into the development, utilization and clinical application of the health system’s EHR and EHR education.

•     Uses nursing knowledge to advocate for clinical end users, analyze clinical workflows and develop processes to enhance clinical workflows, patient safety and excellence in patient outcomes.

  • Integrates nursing experience and understanding of healthcare workflows and job roles to advocate for EHR innovations that represent the needs and goals of the clinical end users so patient safety, best practices and enhanced clinical outcomes are promoted.
