Nurse Clinician – Child NC-PAL

The nurse clinician will support the North Carolina - Psychiatry Access Line (NC-PAL) by providing behavioral health clinical expertise as a clinician, educator, investigator, consultant, and leader. The NC-PAL nurse clinician will serve as a behavioral health resource for patients, nurses, and other health team members throughout Duke and community, with the goals of: empowering clinicians to manage behavioral health in their practices, addressing systemic barriers to behavioral health, and supporting patient ability to navigate behavioral health resources. Individuals in this role may also participate in direct patient care (ex. case reviews and multi-disciplinary health care team assessments).





Provide clinical education and coordination

  • Support the behavioral health consultant in responding to calls from the NC-PAL phone line, including through provision of behavioral health consultative services, referral and care management, and urgent/emergent needs
  • Facilitate meetings of multi-disciplinary health care teams (ex. complex assessments, consultation with observation, etc.)
  • Utilize current nursing and clinical research to support evidence-based clinical decision making and practice




  • Engage and inform clinicians and/or support services staff within Duke Health and in the community about NC-PAL
  • Maintain working knowledge of and liaison with community agencies and resources
  • Conduct targeted outreach to promote the utilization of the NC-PAL phone line regarding individuals with co-occurring I/DD and SED or SMI.
  • Design practice outreach around I/DD including to pediatric practices, family practices, and adult practices in collaboration other key entities, focused on individuals with co-occurring I/DD and SED or SMI



Program development

  • Work closely with program administrative core to:
  • Partner with at least 2 and up to 5 practices to pilot proactive strategies to support individuals with co-occurring I/DD and SED or SMI within the primary care setting
  • Coordinate the development, utilization, and evaluation of appropriate educational resources and interventions that assist the patient/caregiver in developing the skills for self-care (ex. design Family Partner intervention to pilot as part of NC-PAL)
  • Continually evaluate and improve program implementation activities
  • Attend and participate in staff, committee, department, and other administrative meetings.
  • Promote evidence based practice through staff education and participation in developing, implementing, and evaluating process standards such as plans of care, protocols, and guidelines



Direct patient care

  • Participate in case reviews and multi-disciplinary health care team assessments 
  • Assess the educational needs of the patient/caregiver as they relate to the disease process and alterations in function
  • Utilize teaching and learning theories to assist patients and families with physical and emotional impact of body changes and chronic illness



Professional development

  • Remain current with nursing and health care developments and relevant medical/legal issues that impact on patient care
  • Participate in department, hospital, and medical center continuous quality improvement efforts, regular supervisory conferences, and other professional development efforts identified in conjunction with supervisor(s)



Minimum Qualifications



BSN required




3 years of nursing experience required. Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required. BLS required.


Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
