Summer Intern Position
Pre-Clinical Research Team – Duke Human Vaccine Institute

The Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) provides national and international leadership in the fight against major infectious diseases. DHVI is an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to understanding host-pathogen interactions and translating that knowledge into effective vaccines and therapeutics.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated graduate student to join the pre-clinical research team for a summer internship. This position is ideal for students interested in data coordination, biospecimen management, and the intersection of research logistics and laboratory science.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel or other data management tools (e.g., Smartsheet, LIMS) is highly preferred.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are essential.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Comfortable handling confidential data and maintaining data integrity.

Position Description:

  • Assisting with the organization and maintenance of the NHP specimen database, ensuring accurate tracking of samples from collection through assay completion.
  • Supporting the coordination and documentation of sample requests, shipments, and returns across multiple laboratories and institutions.
  • Assisting with the preparation and updating of data spreadsheets, sample manifests, and associated metadata files.
  • Performing routine quality control checks to ensure consistency and accuracy of database entries.
  • Helping track assay progress and compiling incoming data from collaborating laboratories for review by the research and regulatory teams.
  • Participating in internal team meetings to support study planning, monitor sample usage, and update tracking tools.

This internship provides an opportunity to work behind the scenes of preclinical research and gain valuable experience in research coordination, data management, and scientific operations.

Duke University provides an hourly salary range for this position based on the current student level stipends determined by the Duke Student Employment Office.
